1. Damn. Police need better training with the elderly and infirm.

And family members to these folks, who are often suffering from dementia, etc., should be more thoughtful about what kinds of weapons are available to their elderly kin.

Sad.

4. It's sad and you have to wonder if the outcome could have been different,

but, if the info in the article is correct, he had threatened other people with a firearm and fired at LEO. If this had been a 30 yo man, we wouldn't be talking about it. A bullet fired by a 107 yo kills just the same.

he could have been subdued some other way. Cope just like to kill people. They live for this sort of shit...gets the adrenal pumping and gives them a justification for being all rhoided up!

of the cops, but in some cases you need to protect the innocent.

Retreating and calling SWAT showed a lot of control, IMO.

They tried to gas him out and he opened fire. Were they supposed to just wait and hope he ran out of ammo?

He thinks a few should actually get shot or die before they return fire.

Typical blanket crap from you about "cops" meaning all of them. We know, they should have maybe taken seven or eight bullets and then maybe shot somewhere in the guy's general direction.

Why a demented 107 year old has a gun is the real question.

Even he would have handled this better.

107 years old, and he had to be put down in a hail of gunfire from a swat team?

How come I never see an episode of COPS dealing with a riot at a nursing home?

At 107, he is gonna need a nap eventually. Could anyone possibly like WAIT until he went to bed?
Was the macho response even needed?

Finally, there is this question.
Are we being trained to to unthinkingly obey the police OR DIE...regardless of the circumstances?

14. First off, the elderly possessing guns is a problem. Someone should have disarmed him long ago.

I did it when my father-in-law started having hallucinations. He didn't like it -- being a retired Deputy Sheriff and Military with over 50 years combined. But, it's necessary when they are sick, on drugs that affect judgement, etc.

It sounds to me that the police tried a number of options to make this end peacefully. It wasn't one of those just bust down the door and start firing away encounters we often see. But, seems like they could have waited for him to doze off or something. Then again, I was not there. Sad, how ever you look at it.

Even a 107 year old becomes dangerous with a tool used to kill.
