(37,305 posts)I avoided.
No public option, health insurance mandate and a war hawk...that was what scared me away from Hillary!!!
Maybe the problem is he surrounded himself with Clintonites so we got Hillary's policies anyway.

(2,068 posts)And no, we don't hate the President. I wanted to avoid another 3rd way Clinton, but what I got was a 3rd way Obama.

(25,699 posts)But the Al Gore that ran from president is a VERY different Al Gore from the one I see today - I can't imagine the modern Al Gore ever running with Joseph Lieberman.
Obama comes close, but is too centrist. The others are before my time
Now, if you were asking about candidates...

in the first election in American history where 18-year-olds could vote nationally. Ever since then I have asked myself, "how different the world would be if George McGovern had become President and if there had been a McGovern revolution instead of a Reagan revolution?"

(15,501 posts)Unfortunately, he was unfairly tainted as the "heir" of the Vietnam War legacy, as well as being mightily damaged by Eugene McCarthy in the primaries.
Hubert was a true liberal, even before that was popular in the Democratic party. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/27/opinion/27Perlstein.html
From the link:
Humphrey made his national political debut in 1948 when, as mayor of Minneapolis and a candidate for Senate, he headed the Minnesota delegation to the Democratic National Convention. There he led a faction insisting the platform include a federal fair employment commission, a controversial goal of the civil rights movement.
Segregationist Southerners threatened to walk out, a move that could have paralyzed the entire fragile Democratic coalition and handed the White House to the Republicans. The Democrats first presidential defeat in 20 years might have been laid at the feet of this ambitious 37-year-old.
Humphrey could have been excused for quietly backing down. Instead, the man who had earned the nickname the Happy Warrior gave one of the greatest speeches in American political history.
To those who say this civil rights program is an infringement on states rights, he thundered from the convention podium, I say this: The time has arrived in America for the Democratic Party to get out of the shadow of states rights and to walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights.

(22,147 posts)You can argue their administration haven't lived up to that agenda. On the other hand both have spent much of their office with do nothing or do conservative ideas congresses. I think had America doubled down on the 2008 congress instead of running away from them Obama would look much more attractive right now. I seriously look at the conservatives in the house and ask myself does a majority of Americans really believe in this agenda? The real question when is the last time the vast majority of Americans have demanded a progressive agenda and not wasted votes on fake "fighters for you" under the label of Tea party, contract for America, libertarian, christian right...
