our local commissioner told me that environmental/health issues go nowhere because the crazy religious people want horrible things to happen. They are so sure they will be saved. No kidding.

although my politics was still relatively left-wing. Most of my fellow believers were supporting Nixon. However, I was supporting McGovern. I remember being directly told that what was wrong with McGovern from a Christian perspective is that McGovern wanted to end wars and poverty and work to build a just world - like that was something bad.
