More than 75 Democratic lawmakers are calling on House Republican leaders to condemn radio host Rush Limbaughs controversial remarks on Sandra Fluke, the law student who was barred from testifying about contraception before a congressional committee.
On his radio show Wednesday, Limbaugh referred to Fluke as a slut and prostitute and accused her of demanding to be paid to have sex because Fluke advocated for easier access to birth control.
In a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Democrats called Limbaughs words sexually charged, patently offensive, and obscene.
Fluke, a third-year law student at Georgetown University, has become a star of sorts since she was barred from testifying at a recent House committee hearing focusing on the Obama administrations contraception rule. House Democrats convened a hearing last week with Fluke as the sole witness, where Fluke recounted instances of fellow students at Georgetown who couldnt afford contraceptives. Birth control, she said, could cost upwards of $3,000 during a students law school tenure at Georgetown.

(82,849 posts)A nationally-syndicated radio host, with three hours a day to spew like this, taking on a law student? Doesn't seem like a very fair fight. Any of you distinguished gentlemen going to get off your fat wallets and stand up to the bully?
Hello?
Anyone?
Mr. Boehner?

(53,410 posts)He will loose his dittohead dogs on them. I think he even threatens those who could actually take him off the air.
I actually fear for Ms Fluke's life if anyone dares to defy him.

(82,849 posts)But I'll take it: Democrats standing up for the young woman, Republicans sitting silently, too afraid of the bully to do what they know is right because it wouldn't be politically palatable.
Is the GOP really the political party that represents "independent" and "centrist" voters' views?

(34,138 posts)It implies that Ms. Fluke is an immature person. She is a third year law student, a fully adult woman. I find the use of the term "chick" in reference to her particularly offensive in the context of the discussion about how women's issues are being assaulted.
I also object to Limbaugh's use of the word "co-ed" in reference to Ms. Fluke. Both "chick" and "co-ed" are terms that should have gone out of use forty years ago.
But then the issues we are discussing should have been decided forty years ago and here we are, losing ground on them. That is why I don't like giving an inch on requiring respect for WOMEN.

(11,366 posts)She's not really a public person or official, so her burden of proof isn't as high and she could easily prove that not everyone who takes "the Pill" takes it for birth control, but as preventative care for other female ailments.
In fact, didn't she specifically recount a story about a fellow student who developed cysts and had to have surgery because she didn't have access to birth controls pills that would have easily controlled this problem?
Ms. Fluke is a law student. I hope she puts her training to good use.

Why is this drug-addled CIC-bashing, misogynist allowed on a government radio broadcast in the first place?

(8,421 posts)I am personally sick of all of the "oh, he's just an entertainer, so don't get all worked up" line of thinking.
He is poisening the airways, he in NO WAY should be supported by my tax dollars in broadcasting on Armed Services Radio-they can find another way to bring the right wing 'message' to balance any left wing radio...
The man has to go. Imus was fired, now it should be Rush. Imus slandered one group of women, Rush is slandering us all.
FIRE HIM, NOW.
PS- If you are as angry as I am, turn it to action and email the clear channel execs that continue to promote this misogyny by allowing him on the air.
