Israel’s Netanyahu heads for the US with a warning to the White House: Don’t be fooled by Iran

Mortified that the world may be warming up to Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is taking an unpopular message to the White House and the United Nations this week: Don’t be fooled by Tehran’s new leadership.

Netanyahu contends Iran is using conciliatory gestures as a smoke screen to conceal an unabated march toward a nuclear bomb.

He will deliver those strong words of caution — and fresh intelligence — in an attempt to persuade the U.S. to maintain tough economic sanctions and not allow the Islamic republic to develop a bomb or even move closer to becoming a nuclear threshold state.

With the White House cautiously optimistic about its dialogue with Iran, Monday’s meeting between Netanyahu and President Barack Obama could be tense.

Iran is their enemy. Netanyahu will say whatever he thinks will keep us supporting Israel.

He thinks we have to choose between Israel and Iran.

“You're enjoying your day, everything's going your way, then along comes Debbie Downer, always there to tell you 'bout a new disease, a car accident or killer bees You'll beg her to spare you, 'Debbie, Please!' But you can't stop Debbie Downer!”

So goes the theme song of Saturday Night Live’s famous party-pooper, as played by Rachel Dratch, in a role that will now be assumed, much to his regret, by Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli prime minister arrives in New York on Sunday morning with overweight baggage full of stern warnings, dire predictions and apocalyptic prophecies all aimed at throwing cold water on the Administration’s victory celebrations.

Because there’s no denying that from President Obama’s point of view, it has been a weekend of unprecedented diplomatic triumphs. His historic phone call with Iranian President Rohani, followed a few hours later by the unanimous Security Council endorsement of US-Russian plan to rid Syria of its chemical weapons, were like back-to-back walk-off grand slams in a crucial baseball doubleheader.

Even if neither of these developments could have been foreseen a month ago, as a senior Administration official admitted on Friday, there was no denying the loud cheers of self-congratulation that emanated from Washington in their wake.

With the Republican Party consumed by its own internal convulsions, it is small wonder that many of the usual voices warning against “selling out” Israel or comparing Munich 1938 to Tehran or Geneva 2013 fell unusually silent throughout the recent days of Rohani’s courtship of America. Politicians and pundits who would normally echo much of the arguments that Netanyahu is bound to make were more preoccupied, with the potentially existential threat to the Republican Party rather than the one said to be confronting Israel.

In 1996 Netanyahu warned us that Iran would have a Nuclear Bomb in 5 years.
In 1999 Netanyahu warned us that Iran would have a Nuclear Bomb in 5 years.
In 2002 Netanyahu warned us that Iran would have a Nuclear Bomb in 5 years.
In 2004 Netanyahu warned us that Iran would have a Nuclear Bomb in 5 years.
In 2006 Netanyahu warned us that Iran would have a Nuclear Bomb in 5 years.
In 2010 Netanyahu warned us that Iran would have a Nuclear Bomb in 5 years.
in 2013 Netanyahu warned us that Iran would have a Nuclear Bomb in 5 years.

But don't be fooled by Iran.

There is no shot at peace in the middle east. Obama dissed you as not quite as important as you think you are. Deal with it, loser.

Seriously, Israel has nukes and we all know it's not a well-kept secret. So, it's stated enemies want to have nukes too. I think in the Cold War with the former USSR we called that MAD and developed as much advanced weapons technology as possible at a phenomenal cost. So to judge other nations (Iran, for example) for the same actions we took is really rank hypocrisy.

If we were serious about setting a good example we could disarm our self of nukes. But that's not going to happen.

I don't know why this is so hard to understand, doing what is best for Israel is not doing what is best for the United States.
