(46,192 posts)25. Will the District of Columbia shut down? The district does not have complete autonomy and relies on an appropriation from Congress to operate. So during the shutdowns in the 1990s, trash went uncollected, and many city departments closed.
31. Will e-Verify be affected? Yes. The government system to allow companies to voluntarily check the legal work status of its employees would be shut down.
41. What will happen to veterans receiving compensation for service- or combat-related wounds and injuries? The Department of Veterans Affairs said if the shutdown continues into late October, it will run out of money for compensation and pension checks to more than 3.6 million veterans who rely on the money to support themselves.
42. Can I still get a federally backed loan? Maybe not. "Federal loans for rural communities, small business owners, families buying a home will be frozen," President Obama said Friday.

(19,768 posts)I think there will be some compromise that allows both sides to save face.
I don't think the ACA will be defunded. I doubt it will be delayed any longer than it takes to work out that compromise, though a small delay might end up being part of that compromise.
It is fascinating to watch. Nobody is getting hurt that I can see. Nobody is going to go without, as far as I can tell.

(71,265 posts)Veteran services will be hurt. People will go without pay and people live paycheck to paycheck.
If this is just for a few hours then it might not do too much damage but if it lasts for several days or God forbid weeks it will do serious damage.

(46,192 posts)workers who are furloughed will go without pay.
and if the worker is essential, they will have to work without pay until the shutdown ends.
do you think a low paid essential worker not paid for 3 weeks (the length of the last shutdown) is not a hardship?
this is obviously where you've decided to strike and just make it completely obvious to the rest of us that you resent and despise us, poor people and Democrats.

(2,175 posts)After one more half day tomorrow I will no longer be receiving a paycheck until further notice. I'll be eligible for unemployment benefits but frankly that won't cover much more than food and utilities. I'll be faced with contacting my creditors and working out some sort of payment agreements, and that crap is never fun. If this goes on very long I'll start canceling plans for any holiday travel. Might not seem like much to you but it's kinda overwhelming me right now.

(19,768 posts)My whole point with this thread was to chill out, look at it from a political observer standpoint, and chill out rather than go into some wild panic.
The joke I made was at the expense of those going into dramatics as if the moon had just been shot from the sky, not at those who really would be affected by the shutdown.
Still, what has happened has happened. There are no immediate ill effects, anyway. Taking a breath and having a moment of levity doesn't seem like a horrible thing to me. What is the alternative, run around pulling our hair out?
I'm sorry you'll face some difficulties if this isn't resolved soon. Believe me, I can relate - I've gone through four years and counting of worse.
If you don't mind, I would like to know what position you hold.

(2,175 posts)I hope you'll forgive me for not being more specific, but that's the gist of what I do for the DoD. I currently support several training and business intelligence/decision support systems. And yes, it's not the end of the world but it's still an unpleasant and frustrating thing to deal with. Especially since the whole shutdown is so unnecessary.

(21,898 posts)To tell the truth, I did not read the alert message, I normally do not but rather go straight to the post and judge based on that. I sometimes go back and read what was said but this time I did not because the post kind of pissed me off on it's own.
I expect Admins will be watching closely tonight on a lot of alerts and responses since this is going to be an active night for both under the new system.
joshcryer
(62,536 posts)I remember this coming up when we came to DU3 though that people could make up crappy alerts (insulting the jury, the posters, etc) on borderline stuff and it would be voted down for that reason. I think that's one reason the admins have started reviewing all alerts.
I just know if you are insulting in your alert juries will nullify.

(14,162 posts)that people tonight, here, right now, will get hurt because of what MAY happen. The problem is serious for many... but not at this point in time.
I think those who could get seriously hurt by the shutdown need to wait till the "thing" actually happens. The possibility that the government will be back in motion even tomorrow or in another day is still there.
Worry about what MAY happen can do serious hurt now. Please just wait and see. Don't have a heart attack because of what could happen... and maybe won't.
Then again, if you're a type 1 person and need to scream it out... do it.

(19,768 posts)I posted this minutes after the govt shutdown for a couple of reasons. One, because what is done is done - what happened, happened. You can run around and pull your hair out or you can take a breath and chill out and accept reality. I tried to provide a bit of levity in a dig at those drama kings/queens who'd rather go into theatrics and act as if the moon had been blown from the sky. The joke was aimed toward them, not the people who would be hurt by the shutdown. Maybe that should have been less subtle.
From the perspective of a political observer, which many of us are I believe, this is wild political theater. Recognizing that doesn't equal having joy that people could be hurt needlessly.
It really is hard for me to fathom that this was all too much for most of the DUers who replied to grasp.
I still think it is better to chill and think than go into wild panic.
