(17,139 posts)President Obama on Wednesday canceled part of his upcoming trip to Asia and invited congressional leaders to the White House to discuss the budget standoff that has shut down parts of the federal government for the first time in 17 years.
According to a White House official, the top four leaders of both parties from both houses were invited to meet with Obama at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time. The president will urge the House to pass a clean continuing resolution without what Obama has called ideological demands such as riders aimed at undermining his signature health-care law so that the government can reopen.

(17,139 posts)WASHINGTONPresident Barack Obama invited congressional leaders to the White House for the first high-level meeting since parts of the government closed on Tuesday, creating a potential path to negotiations on government spending and a looming debt limit crisis.
A White House official said Mr. Obama will use the Wednesday meeting, set for 5:30 p.m. EDT, to press leaders to reopen the government and reiterate his position that he won't negotiate with Republicans on the debt limit or under the threat of a continued shutdown.
House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) received invitations to the meeting.

(9,810 posts)Past the debt extension deadline, past the point where most people receiving federal paychecks (employed and contract) have exhausted their savings, past the point when winter sets in here in Colorado and we cannot repair our flood-ravaged roads (you can't lay concrete or asphalt in freezing temps), buildings or irrigation system, past the point where our leaking oil and gas wells contaminate the entire watershed... And on, and on, and on.
I'm not advocating any retreat, but the only way we can wear down this Teahadi Tantrum is to get them at a table. When they're isolated in the House Chambers, they think they're powerful because they're hearing nothing but their own echoes and smelling nothing but their own booze-breath. That notion must be disabused.

Pres Obama is the one thing standing between us and that catastrophe. After watching him for this long deal with them, I defer to his judgement. Also, I believe he quietly talks to Bill and Hillary about these crackpots. Those three are are political team to be reckoned with. So lets just see how this plays out shall we. We don't really pay attention to the stuff here that makes or breaks an election:
The economy...it's ok.
The economy...it's improving.
The economy...not such a big deal.
Well, surprise, it is the economy. It is completely the economy. And the reality? It sucks.
As predicted by me and a very few others back in the economic fiasco times after the moron left, Obama did the exact opposite of what he should of done. The banks? Fine. Wall Street? Fine. Any people go to jail? No. So now he is, and will be blamed for what he did, rightly or not, by the very same people he saved. They know that a Romney is in their best interests.
It is not going to be close election. Look for Obama to carry California, Oregon, Washington, DC, Maryland, and Illinois. That's about it. We will know by very early election day that Rmoney will be President. And a shocked WH will wonder why.

(1,067 posts)No Obama is not going to cave and no he is not going to give away the store. As a prior poster stated he will get Boehner away from the crazies on the hill and he will have to answer to McConnell and Reid. He will not have the backup of the crazies. The President is holding the all the cards here. Quite frankly I think he is going to invoke the 14th amendment, pay the bills and let the courts sort it out. by the time it is done we are halfway into 2014 and the midterm campaigning will be in full swing. Some pundits have suggested that the House will then try to impeach Obama for using the 14th amendment. If they do this then they will lose the house for certain and I fully believe that the house is stupid enough to start impeachment proceedings because their hatred for Obama is part of their DNA and they cannot stop themselves. The Tea Party members are zealots, they are true believers and that will also be their downfall. Now I could be completely wrong but I think Obama has finally learned that Lucy is always going to pull the football away.
