Polls are showing that the Republicans are being blamed by most Americans for the trouble arising from the gov't shutdown, so I certainly hope the voters remember to blame the GOP in kind for the trouble they're causing, by voting in a year to get the extremists out!
POLL --> By a margin of 72-22 percent, the Quinnipiac University poll found the public not wanting a government shutdown, and by 64-27 percent opposed to holding up an increase in the debt ceiling as a political cudgel to block Obamacare.
Democrats have moved out to a nine point, 43-34 percent, lead in a generic ballot of which partys candidates for Congress voters are inclined to support. http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattlepolitics/2013/10/01/dont-hold-hostage-budget-debt-ceiling-survey/

(2,237 posts)Things can (and likely will) easily change in the polls, especially the longer this shutdown lasts. The trends do seem pretty good for us so far though on the CR and budget.
On the debt ceiling though the numbers are much more narrow, and it seems like a large part of the public doesn't even understand what the debt ceiling is and what the consequences are of breaching it, democrats have only an 8 point lead over the GOP there for who the public sides with, rather than a 20+ point lead like on the CR and budget.
I don't know about you, but today I've honestly started to get worried for the first time that the house Republicans are crazy enough to actually let us breach the debt ceiling given how they keep on claiming that they have more leverage there.

(21,056 posts)you have to at least be highly concerned they're perfectly fine with causing this to spiral out of control. I can understand why the president feels exasperated.
I think the longer it goes, the more people who are likely voters will understand why the GOP reps actions are unbelievably wrongheaded.

(18,627 posts)Since there are enough votes in the house to stop the shutdown right now, ther certainly will be enough to raise the debt ceiling.
So it will boil down to Boehner allowing a vote or not.
If he didn't allow a vote and the world economy collapses I would think he wouldn't be alive much longer. With every billionaire on earth losing buckets of money because of one guy I'm sure we would hear of some mysterious cause of death before too long.

(8,329 posts)After the last round of redistricting in the House, even with that edge we are in trouble. Hopefully, some of the Senate seats are in better shape after the Republican temper tantrum

(10,270 posts)someone on the TeeVee Machine the other day said a 7-point spread nationally would be enough for Dems to retake the House, DESPITE the gerrymandered to hell and back GOP advantage.
