Besides, only people who LOVE pit bulls can actually identify the breed. The rest of us are left to flail wildly in the dark.

on edit - Now it appears they have no idea as they changed it to 'dogs'

(30,947 posts)The news said the dogs were believed to be Rottweilers. No proof that they were until they locate the dogs. I really cannot believe they could be Rottweilers. I have owned two Rottweilers and never met a Rottie that I didn't like.

(29,929 posts)dog bites hurt like hell. I remember this time a Gordon Setter bit my arm while I was trying to pull her off a smaller dog she had by the neck. Ironically, the small dog was an American Pit Bull Terrier.

(29,929 posts)as a puppy, the Gordon Setter would lick her so much the puppy would be soaked in saliva. Somewhere down the line she just turned on her for some reason. It started during breakfast one morning, than when she jumped on her back while the mailman was throwing a package on our patio. The APBT was no more than 35 lbs while the Gordon Setter was closer to 50 lbs so it was always completely one-sided. I don't think the Setter meant to bite me as I broke up fights before without an issue and let go almost immediately. Spent 2 years keeping the Setter away from the ABPT.
I feel and probably did fail as an owner but had no idea how to fix it. I tried several things but for some reason absolutely disliked her, makes me sad considering how much she liked her. I read that allowing dogs to playfight is a mistake which I didn't take seriously at the time. Doesn't matter now as I lost my home and the Setters had to go to the pound. The APBT was easy to find a home for because she is so adorable.

(36,286 posts)I didn't realize you were talking about dogs you knew. I wouldn't blame yourself - there's a lot of communication that goes on between dogs that we only catch glimpses of.

Then I'll discuss what you have to go through when a raccoon bites you. The joy of rabies and tetanus can't be shared without experiencing it! Woo hoo.

(29,929 posts)but certainly got clawed by one by making the mistake of lifting the box a cat liked to lay under. Hurt worse than the bite.

(39,961 posts)am I the only person on DU that has 40+lbs. raccoons? They are huge. I know this is probably a southern thing but they are humongous. And they eat everything (including garbage) not nailed down.
hedgehog
(36,286 posts)Aerows
(39,961 posts)and dammit, cute, I'd be frightened of them. It's like a large dog that you can't keep out of the trash, but you are kind of scared because they have these little hands, dunk things in water, and are HUGE.

(39,961 posts)I'm in S. MS and the raccoons here are plus sized.
hedgehog
(36,286 posts)At least, it used to be that way when you went to various web sites. Raised in Ohio, I always thought of bobcats as about twice the size of a house cat, but then my kids were studying the wildlife of New York and a different size range was given. I think there is a lot of regional variation that most people are unaware of.

(21,691 posts)Papa 'Coon, Mama 'Coon and three Teen 'Coons, one of whom goes all Early Cuyler on us when we urge them to keep out of the backyard (where are chickens are) - standing up on his hind legs and growling. I'm scarier when I'm on MY hind legs and growling! Papa, who is big enough to ride, just trundles off with the rest of the family.
We've started leaving food in the front for them. What the hell - we're already feeding half the damn forest!
Most of the skunks are on the smaller size, but there's one who looks like someone upholstered a volleyball with a skunk. I'm pretty sure she's not pregnant, either. Usually get around 10 skunks showing up for dinner and petting.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)raccoon! It got all mad at me and grunted!
It kind of scared the shit out of me and I grabbed the broom on the back porch, and it didn't look like it was scared. I don't know what made it run away, but it wasn't the broom - I think it was a dog howling.
Scared the crap out of me!
REP
(21,691 posts)I'm sure you already know this, but you're in an area where there's an epidemic of rabies in raccoons. That one was behaving normally - they're nervy little fuckers - but you know all too well the prophylaxis ain't no fun if one gets nippy. But they're so cute - messy and noisy, but cute. When the house was still being worked on, the tiler stayed here one night and woke up in the middle of the night, thinking someone was trying to break in. Well, yes, it was bandits breaking in - fuzzy, fat-ass masked bandits who loooooove garbage.
Here, it's bats we have to be paranoid about giving us rabies. It's always something.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)that a rabid skunk could bite me on the ass and would probably die on contact.

(15,403 posts)About 3/4 the height of as my dog Shari (a heeler/retirever mix that was 45 lbs at the time); fat, a bit grey in the muzzle with one ear chewed up and a pinched tail. Gave me a glance, a huff, then strutted across the road in front of me like it owned the road.
And possums - did I mention I amost hit one at 1am in the morning coming home from work on the city streets that reared up on it's hind legs giving me "what for" - and I clearly saw it's head, shoulders and bared teeth over the hood - and I was driving a small pick-up truck!
Raccoons in this area (San Diego, CA), have been known to eat cats and small dogs that were outside overnight - and fight coyotes.

(39,961 posts)are so big, and so nonchalant, they could take on five pit bulls and come out smiling. I've never seen such a huge beast that is so blase.
Ugliest critter ever made. One got into the trashcan. It had warts all over it's little face, and it HISSED at me when I turned over the garbage can, then ran away.
ProudToBeBlueInRhody
(16,399 posts)We had two come up on our porch a number of years back and start opening these small round garbage cans. We went to the door and stared at them while they just went about rummaging thru them. When we opened the door, they ran. They weren't 40 pounds, but I've seen some that come close in other situations. And if they are rabid....run....run like hell. I know environmental police that have put four or five shots from a service weapon to the body on one and the thing didn't slow down a bit.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)and a broom doesn't even scare them much. Loud noises and waving the broom doesn't scare them, they are so nonchalant.
Note: I'm badass with a broom.
