(65,127 posts)The President has made clear that he will not pay a ransom for Congress doing its job and paying our bills. It is better for economic certainty for Congress to take the threat of default off the table for as long as possible, which is why we support the Senate Democrats efforts to raise the debt limit for a year with no extraneous political strings attached. The President also believes that the Republican Leadership in the House should allow for an up or down vote on the clean continuing resolution passed by the Senate that would pass with a bipartisan majority to reopen the government. Once Republicans in Congress act to remove the threat of default and end this harmful government shutdown, the President will be willing to negotiate on a broader budget agreement to create jobs, grow the economy, and put our fiscal house in order. While we are willing to look at any proposal Congress puts forward to end these manufactured crises, we will not allow a faction of the Republicans in the House to hold the economy hostage to its extraneous and extreme political demands. Congress needs to pass a clean debt limit increase and a funding bill to reopen the government.

(3,300 posts)And isn't the debt limit and budget between the house and senate to produce? All Obama does is sign it or not, and nothings gotten to his desk yet! So how the hell are they deflecting the crisis onto him? The repukes orchestrated this all by their small-minded selves.

(44 posts)it only took 6 years, but looks like the guy we voted for learned his lesson. limpuglicants can never be trusted.
ever. none of them. not in any elected office, and not one of their string yanking owners.
let's keep our fingers crossed that for the first time he goes BIG! BOLD! BALLS TO THE WALL.
he has a few hours to pull off the coup of a poltical life time and crush these teavangel wingnuts and
the kochroach brigade once and for all.
it's actually his duty to not only save the country from financial Armageddon, but take this
tactic out of the political arsenal once and for all for him and future presidents.
the president should demand an end to the shutdown.
the president should demand an end to the sequestration.
the president should demand the scrapping of the continuing resolution.
the president should demand the house agree to his last budget numbers
and
the president should demand that the debt ceiling be eliminated or put on
automatic pilot.
hang them out to dry.

(90,010 posts)Glad you're here! I love your "cochroach brigade" and your pointing out that the opposition is simply NOT to be trusted. They have a bigger agenda - to wipe out all the gains we made as progressives in the modern era, for voting, for women, for workers, etc. And I'm glad he's standing firm - mentioning the reality he has to consider, which is ALL future presidents facing crises. He has to take the long view. This is standing up for democracy itself, and the whole notion upon which our democracy is built: the majority rule. One little sliver of the population does NOT get to have its way just because it thinks it's superior and entitled. I don't care how fervently they believe it, how tightly they hold to its supposed roots in the Bible, how fiercely the embrace the whole "lord of the manor" thing being entitled to rule, because of some "Divine Right" of white males, preferably those who also are property owners. Heck, even the mostly radical extremist and war-monger Thomas Friedman in the NYTimes writes about this as THE reason Obama MUST stand firm! Even Thomas Friedman.
This stupid shit they're pulling HAS to stop. It must NOT become embedded in our culture as the way we do business.

(211 posts)After he gets those things and wins this battle, what are the strategies to balance the budget and start reducing the debt, because that would be another way to eliminate the debt ceiling as a political weapon.

(53,661 posts)And everyone was furious at the GOP threatening their retirement and the care of people they know, and the veterans as well.
Not only from the debt ceiling, but the shutdown and the sequester!
(And I got another solution to get into Obamacare at no extra monthly cost.)

(90,010 posts)and useful thing? Something WORTH having? Something that helps people? Something of value that's good to have? That government is NOT the problem? Hmmm... well, how 'bout that? Maybe we can finally do more than simply take back the House. Maybe we can start taking back our country from the fucking reagan legacy!
The bad guys have been trying to reprogram the public for 30 years - ever since reagan - and condition the mainstream thinking such that government is a bad thing, unnecessary, meddling, superfluous, wasteful, bloated, awful, icky, and did nothing but give away free stuff to the undeserving. Unless you start drilling down - or they're FORCED to start drilling down, themselves - to find out that the purported undeserving are the nation's war dead, or their grieving families, or children stricken with cancer, or the disabled, or ... it goes on and on. Gee, guess what? The government does stuff we actually do want and need and appreciate. Stuff we think is worthwhile paying for and for which we'll agree to open the spigot back up even if it's tax money. Fellow Americans who've been furloughed who need their jobs. And we can see their faces and sympathize. Probably would, at this very instant, be fucking grover norquist straight in the heart - assuming he had one.
For so long America has been force-taught that all that amiable, presumably harmless, kindly old uncle stuff that reagan sold on behalf of his fat-cat benefactors and industrialists and capitalists about the government being bad, undesirable, and "the problem." That's 30-plus years of thought conditioning and perception management that we may finally be able to start reversing. Although some of us expected as much from the eye-opening jolt of Hurricane Katrina, and since then, Hurricane Sandy and a few monster tornados - that underscored how important - CRITICALLY important and necessary and appreciated and helpful and positive - government actually was. And that sure didn't last long. Wonder how long it'll take before this lesson finally takes root?
