NYT: Breaking News: Obama Rejects Republican Proposal for Short-Term Debt Limit Plan (updated)

Obama Rejects G.O.P. Offer of Short-Term Debt Limit Plan

President Obama on Thursday rejected a proposal from politically besieged House Republican leaders to extend the nation’s borrowing authority for six weeks because it would not also reopen the government. Yet both parties saw it as the first break in Republicans’ brinkmanship and a step toward a fiscal truce.

Twenty Republicans, led by Speaker John A. Boehner, went to the White House at Mr. Obama’s invitation after a day of fine-tuning their offer to increase the Treasury Department’s authority to borrow money to pay existing obligations through Nov. 22. In exchange, they sought the president’s commitment to negotiate a deal for long-term deficit reduction and a tax overhaul.

Mr. Boehner and his colleagues left after about an hour and a half without speaking to waiting reporters.

The White House says President Barack Obama and Republican leaders reached no specific determination on how to end the partial government shutdown or raise the nation's debt ceiling. The White House, however, described the meeting as good and said Obama looked forward to progress.

regressive while concomitantly calling for increases in MIC funding and cuts in the social safety net. Major bastids: those who are harmed by voting for and re-electing these bastids are surely some of the dumbest clucks ever to walk the face of the earth.

At least that was the term in last week's list of demands. And that means that they can't cut taxes for the rich without raising them on everyone else.

I thought signaling acceptance for the six-week debt-ceiling deal was a smart move, since there's no way they'd pull another white-knuckle game with that anytime soon. But I couldn't figure out how they would solve the government shutdown issue.

By tying the acceptance of the one to the inclusion of the other, Obama has outmaneuvered them. He'll get both (and hopefully, no further debt-ceiling shenanigans--though there will certainly have to be some budget negotiations).

this can be done.

The Thugs have to be shown that you CANNOT hold the government hostage.

If you accept any deal, it would just enforce the belief that this method works. Then we will see it again and again.

This stops now!

It's time for the Republican party to become so small that we can drown it in a bathtub.

We never wanted this fight, we tried to work with you, gave you too much.
And still you came after us looking for blood.

My hope is that this is the beginning of the new Obama. One who believes that his next few years in office should be used to destroy every conservative principle and pave the way for a 2016 with Democratic control of all parts of the government.

"The Republican proposal could come to a vote as soon as Friday. But the White House and Congressional Democrats remained skeptical that House Republican leaders could pass the proposal. A large faction of Tea Party conservatives campaigned on promises never to vote to increase the nation’s debt limit, and say they do not believe the warnings — including from Republican business allies — that failing to act could provoke a default and economic chaos globally. And House Democrats vowed not to support the proposal without a companion measure to fully fund a government now shuttered for 10 days."

These SOBs should be identified as the ignorant imbeciles they are! They shouldn't even be turned loose with their personal checkbooks. They are DUMB.

Members of Congress should have their names on the line for bills they rang up, too.

Surely they will realize that a debt ceiling law cannot be valid. It conflicts with reason.

Payment is implied and authorized when legislation passed by both Senate and House receives the President's signature. The debt ceiling law is in conflict with almost every other law!

Should the entity they have elected to represent become financially insolvent, responsibility for payment is left to them.

Tell Congress. Pay up and get out!

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, but yes, even I realize there are probably at least a dozen ways Members of Congress would weasel their way out of paying for the bills they authorized, so don't bother explaining this to me. However, I know I am right. If these idiots won't go peacefully, vote them out!
