Cognitive Dissonance and the Republican Denial of Reality

Cognitive Dissonance and the Republican Denial of Reality

"SNIP.......................

They’re simply suffering from a severe case of cognitive dissonance. The reality they wished existed doesn’t, therefore they’ve simply created an alternate reality where their rhetoric makes sense.

◾You’re fiscally conservative—while running up giant deficits.
◾You’re for small government—except all the times when you want government to support your side of the argument.
◾You’re a patriot—while talking of secession and revolution whenever the Constitution doesn’t support your ideology.
◾You’re for the Constitution—yet that same Constitution rarely supports your policies.
◾You’re against the government shutdown—even though many members of your party had been calling for one.
◾You’re a Christian—while supporting policies which contradict the teachings of Jesus Christ.
◾You’re for the middle class—by supporting policies which screw them over for the benefit of the rich.
◾You’re against government programs—while living off government programs.
◾You’re against people on welfare—while you live in a state that takes in more federal dollars than it pays out.

I can see this fluttering around the heads of garden-variety Tea Party folks... like a little Disney bird. Once they discover that they have discovered this term, it will be theirs to play with like a new gun.

Just like "open minded" and "critical thinking" before them, "cognitive dissonance" will have its meaning neutered in the media so that anyone can apply it to anyone they don't agree with.

Enjoy it before it gets rendered meaningless.

I'm am always amazed that they are blind to the hypocrisy of those
cognitive disconnects you listed.

They support the troops who are brave enough to go into combat and
risk their lives, but abandon our veterans once they return home.

They don't want government involved in health care, except in cases
regarding the uterus and ovaries.

They always advocate for "freedom", provided you're not LGBT, or a
member of a union, or an OWS protester, or ....

They hate welfare for the poor, but they love welfare for multi-billion
dollar corporations.

They hate activist judges, except for the conservative activist judges
who blatantly wipe their butts with the Constitution and rule in ways
which favor Republicans.

They hate the poor in general (and blame them for their poverty), while
all of their policies serve to keep them in poverty.

On and on and on, the list can go. An entire book on this subject
could be written, from the perspective of psychology.

How can they say they are followers of Jesus Christ and Ayn Rand ?

The two are completely incompatible.
