Just look at the front page of GD.
I strongly advise the avoidance of the "I have no-one on my ignore list" policy. The magnanimity of those of you who adhere to this strategy is not reciprocated.

(35,176 posts)I use it to stop myself when I get really upset. I ignore then wait a few days then un-ignore. I don't mind reading a difference of opinion, even when I think it is stupid or does not belong here. We are all in the same boat and limiting discourse is the fastest way to keep digging that hole.
Sometimes you just have to look at who is posting and just know that nothing you say will stop the machine and shine it on.

(35,176 posts)and I think in all that time I have had one OP hidden (2004?) and only one hidden response, maybe a few more but not very many. This is why. When I feel my blood pressure starting to rise above the normal limit for political disagreement I stop because I know I cannot continue without making it too personal. I was however, before they stopped showing us the numbers, getting quite a list of people ignoring me.

(151,259 posts)I can't see what the point would be. If I don't see someone posting, does that mean they aren't posting? I don't think so. I want to see everything on DU, if I choose to. I frequently ignore threads, the old fashioned way. I just don't click on them. I also ignore a few people in the same way, if they choose to attack rather than discuss issues with me.
But, to hide them so I can't see what they post? That would be incredibly stupid. I tried it once, for a short time, and quickly ended the experiment.
Putting people on Ignore is a failure on the part of the person doing the ignoring. It indicates that they want to see only what they agree with. That's not a progressive thing to do. Everyone gets a voice, whether or not I agree with what they say.

(611 posts)Several years ago, I tried it. I only blocked one user, and only because that user kept dominating threads, turning everything into the same arguments. All the threads were still the same arguments, however, and they were much more confusing since I couldn't see the entire discussion. I'm easily confused already, so I decided that using ignore was not helpful for me.
I wonder sometimes if I am on ignore lists. How would I know whether I'm being ignored, or just saying stupid, irrelevant, or uninteresting things? Hmm.

(7,051 posts)Used to be four, but one was TOS'd recently ... which tells me my instincts are good. All, in my opinion, aren't interested in genuine dialog. For example, one finds anti-semitism in just about everything. Another, sexism. Both are plain irrational in their efforts to twist and contort an issue to "prove" their accusations.
In the end, I agree with you. Used judiciously, the ignore feature is a godsend. However, if one is using it to purge and cleanse the site from differing opinions, you're doing yourself a disservice and aren't quite grasping the concept of the website.

(24,544 posts)Buzz through a thread, see my moniker and for reasons known only to them simply MUST respond to me and in every instance with the most brain-melting stupidity combined with a nastiness that would make Sarah Palin blush. Stupid and nice or Nasty and smart I can handle. Nasty and stupid is another animal entirely.
But considering that nobody knows what the hell this OP is talking about and that the OP is one of a small group that frequently feels the urge to announce that s/he is putting people on ignore for daring to voice a difference of opinion, this thread seems more like a fit of adolescent pique rather than a genuine community service.

(151,259 posts)Physical bullying - pushing or hitting someone, damaging their things like their clothes, books or bike, stealing from them or forcing them to hand over their belongings.
Verbal bullying - name calling, spreading rumours, nasty teasing, threats, insults. Sending nasty or threatening e-mails or text messages is also bullying.
Emotional bullying - ignoring or deliberately leaving someone out. Making nasty remarks about someone's family or home life, or something they can't help doing. Always criticising or rubbishing everything they do. Making rude gestures or comments.
Prejudice bullying - bullying someone because of the colour of their skin, their religion or their country of origin. Some people might be bullied because they wear glasses or a hearing aid, or just because they look different.
Deliberately and openly ignoring someone is one of the most common form of bullying among kids. "Don't pay any attention to Jimmy. Don't talk to him. I'm ignoring him!" It's the first stage of shunning someone. On DU, any DUer can ignore another for any reason. Nothing wrong with that. Announcing that you are doing so, however, is a way of encouraging others to ignore the same person you are ignoring. That turns into public shunning, which can be a devastating bullying method.
