I have a relative who is a police officer. She came by my house telling me she had something to show me. She had a stack of papers maybe about 30 sheets. I asked her what it was .She said it was police reports on several family members. She told me she had police reports on one of our cousins who got in trouble a lot when he young, he is now trying to change his life.. Then she had a rape report on one of our cousins, whom I had no clue she was raped as a child. Then she told me she had a report on a family member who was a victim of domestic violence by her husband. I got very angry with her and told her that was abuse of power and evil. I told her she had no fucking right to do that and even copy it for her sick personal files .What the fuck is wrong with her??? Fuck. This is a damn control thing

(14,400 posts)be fired PDQ if this ever gets back to the department. Hell, I'd probably call them and let them know.

(2,679 posts)Report her. It is abuse of power and a violation of these people's personal rights.

(7,804 posts)Whatever her reasons, they can't be seen as benevolent. She's broken a cardinal rule. I agree with the rest of the responses to your OP, report her.

(12,608 posts)It seemed to me she wanted me to see her so called power. And she was like a kid who found a buried treasure. It was sick. Ever since she became a cop she has had this power trip thing

(7,804 posts)I wouldn't just report her, I'd cut off all ties with her.

(15,805 posts)This person is corrupt, immoral and untrustworthy. She abused her authority and broke the law and her own dept regulations to acquire restricted information for her own titillation. She should not be in law enforcement.
You must already have suspicions that this might be just the tip of the iceberg and only the beginning of what mayhem she might cause if she uses this information to create chaos and harm your family members. If she's shared these personal secrets with you, who else knows, and where will it end?
Stop her before she acts on this private information. Report her to the highest authority of her station, not some desk/phone person who might cover it up or fail to get it to the appropriate official.

(5,909 posts)One time a cop liked a female relative of mine who worked at a restaurant and ran her license plate to get her home address.
I also know of one who did the same thing to gain info on a guy his ex was dating.
Sick, and a huge abuse of power. Like someone said above, I would go the state police as they protect their own and her immediate superiors may not do anything.

(14,531 posts)there has to be a reason why she felt secure enough in her actions that she flaunted it. The most obvious one is that there are many who do the same thing at the station, so she felt not only is it acceptable she could advertise what she is doing. Even if it is a breach of ethics and possibly illegal.

(24,565 posts)you do need to get this stopped, SummerSnow. She has no business in law enforcement.

(2,286 posts)Departments have policies against this and safeguards built into the system. If she really has all of those records, she left an electronic trail. Report it. She should be terminated.

(564 posts)LE is NOT supposed to abuse their power like this, and that's what it is. How dare she.
Does she realize she's opened her department (and hopefully her) up to a huge lawsuit?
That at best it's wildly inappropriate?
Seriously, she needs to be fired and blackballed from LE. People like her get into LE for the power and control, and not only that, they give LE a bad name
Report her to the very top, and maybe other LE agencies, the State Troopers
Will you keep us updated?
LE= law enforcement. LEO = law enforcement officer
Dude: I live about 3 hours N.W of you in St. Lawrence county. The NYS troopers are some of the best in the country, and I daresay they will not look at this lightly. (coming from me, that's saying something. Calling out good LEO is important though)

Proceed with all due prudence.
