Like elsewhere in the US, urban areas blue. Rural areas heavy red, suburbs leaning red. Overall, Dems outnumber 'pubs by about 800,000. Indies inbetween. State party very dysfunctional, DLC-oriented, and work harder to keep progressives from being elected than 'pubs. On the street, Dems more progressive than DLC, so not much support for state party.

The developer is part of the 1% and the only people invited to speak at the Town Squares are the likes of Romney, Palin, Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, etc. Even the local Barnes and Nobel only have book signings for the Repukes, so I refuse to shop there. The Daily Sun is the local paper and it is a repug rag. Hell, even Fox and Friends broadcasted from The Villages. When Romney came to campaign, the Democratic Club of The Villages were asked to leave. We did not heckle or say anything but because we were wearing blue Dem Tee shirts (and were very respectful), we had to leave. So much for freedom.

It would have come down the next day because that's when Obama was Officially named the winner in FL. But no. Some one took it. I went to Rollins, which is a reflection of the Winter Park area and most of the people I encountered from my school days are Republicans. They only figured out how staunchly progressive I was when Obama came into office. I hardly talk to any of them anymore.

Orange County may be Democratic, but they're not progressives.

I have found very few progressives, anywhere in Seminole County.

You may be in a progressive pocket of Central Florida, but Florida is NOT a progressive state. God, that is so misleading and ignores what Jeb Bush did, and Rick Scott is doing in this state.

Republicans have 63% of the seats in the Florida State legislature (75-45).

Plus the state Democratic Party has not been very effective in galvanizing the electorate for congressional/mid term elections.

I hope you're right; we'll see.

Too many regressive laws and politicians. Florida still has no protections for LGBT people in employment or housing and it has extremely backward marijuana laws and no medical marijuana program. Marco Rubio elected to the Untied States Senate, a shame less noticed because Ted Cruz is better at being a fascist loudmouth, but a shame nonetheless.
Oh, and the elections, which Florida just can't seem to fix. It gets old, the long lines and confused precincts. The Republican control.

So many things I love about Florida, a few changes and I'd live there. But I don't. Maybe someday!

Problem is a real shitty and dysfunctional state party. Dems on the street pretty progressive, state party is uber-DLC and works harder to defeat progressives than repukes. Hell, the state party chairwoman a few years back was a freakin' republican lobbyist! People are starting to get organized on grass-roots level...everyone hates the state party.

Florida is changing, and we are becoming more and more blue every election. But don't mention that to the masses who still dipshit their way into blaming us vis a vis Nader. It's the ignorant way, and that path is strong.

Your state government is RW. Your congressional delegation is overwhelmingly RW. Your record on civil rights is terrible. Your record on women's rights is terrible. Your environmental laws are terrible.

Maybe it's just my perspective here in an actual progressive state but I'm not impressed.

Also your weather sucks and your roads are terrifying.

I also am a floridian of 55 years and the state is in the grips of the tea party congress and tea party Governor. They are steeling our money, resources and health.
Instead of adding protected land we are selling land we own.
Our education funds are being channeled to private religious schools and the war on teachers, poor and middle class is at depcon 5.

Look 2010 killed this state. That monster pRick Scott is probably going to turn this state Blue all on his own. But we still have those silly pockets of repuke lunacy (even down here in SoFla). Check out the winners in Martin County. They at least saw how crazy Allen West was, so we were able to get rid of his carpet-bagging ass. But Martin County on a whole is one of the most conservative areas in the state (except the Redneck Riviera in the Panhandle). I hate to even shop in that county. Thank goodness for St Lucie, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties - South Florida rocks!!

I wouldn't call it tremendously progressive, but it's far more liberal and progressive than out-of-staters are lead to believe. We're a deep purple that unfortunately due to the magic of gerrymandering are saddled with an uber-red legislature and governor (who hopefully will be one and done a year from now).

The coasts are bluer than the inland and the panhandle. All wonderful places to see throughout the state, though.

I love Florida, warts and all. I wouldn't leave here for any other state....save perhaps Hawaii.

Fri Oct 18, 2013, 02:22 PM
Oct 2013

1) Florida's district are gerrymandered

2) Old people all over the nation moves to Florida for retirement (Not criticizing but we know old people tend to vote republican)

Due to above reasons, it is a purple state. Otherwise, it would a solid blue. Although, Florida was blue in both 2008 and 2012. So there is a hope to change the state level officials in 2014.
