SHE SAID ‘NO’ ...So This DRUNKEN Off-Duty Deputy Handcuffed And Assaulted Her

A Off-Duty Deputy Hit On A Marine.

An off-duty deputy of the Richland County, South Carolina Sheriff’s office is now unemployed thanks to his actions at a Buffalo Chicken Wings restaurant bar. Witnesses say that Deputy Paul Allen Derrick was drunk when he approached Brittany Ball, an off-duty Marine stationed at Fort Jackson. They claim that she rebuffed Derrick’s advances and that the two began to argue. After a few minutes, Derrick left the restaurant, returning from his car with a pair of handcuffs. He grabbed Ms. Ball, and pulling her hands roughly behind her back, handcuffed her. He then slammed her head into a metal table. Derrick shouted at Ball to alternately “Stand up!” and to “Sit down!” while holding her from behind. He took the opportunity to rest his hand on her breast while yelling, “This is how Marines deal with soldiers.” Told you he was drunk.

Customers got out their cell phones and started filming.

Luckily, several customers were recording the incident. They shouted at the off-duty deputy to let the woman go, that he had “crossed the line” and that they were calling “the real cops.” A few of the men approached Derrick but backed off when he threatened to arrest them, too. “Step away!” he yelled at them. Ball’s companion, Steven Hughes, was one of the witnesses who filmed the event:

“I said I’m going to start videoing this because I think something is about to get out of hand. And about the time I got my video out, he had her turned around and was putting her in handcuffs.”

http://www.wistv.com/story/23698228/deputy-fired-after-trying-to-arrest-soldier-at-bar

Soon, the Columbia, S.C. police arrived. They ordered Derrick to release Ball immediately, then started speaking to witnesses and viewing the video. They then took the drunken off-duty deputy into custody, charging him with assault and battery. They also confiscated a loaded gun that Derrick had on him, along with his ID and badge.

Derrick’s boss tried to protect him.

The Sheriff of Richland County, Leon Lott, stood behind his deputy at first. He asserted that the arrest was proper since Ball had been “resisting.” He also dismissed the report that Derrick had been hitting on the Marine, insisting that the deputy was only trying to calm the woman. After pressure from the community, Lott finally placed Derrick on unpaid suspension for the duration of the investigation. After meeting with Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago and Fifth Circuit Solicitor Dan Johnson, Lott fired Derrick on Tuesday. The state attorney general noted that Derrick was not allowed to arrest anyone without another officer on the scene. This is per a Supreme Court ruling which limits the authority of Class 3 officers. So, goodbye to another law enforcement officer who abused his authority.

I couldn't watch all of the rest of it, I was so angry.

As long as that went on, nobody really went in there and stopped it.

Restaurant staff should have called police immediately (maybe they did), and patrons should all have stepped in and shamed that man into relenting.

I hope the victim ends up owning every bit of the terrorist's wealth and some of the restaurant's, too.

It won't make up for the terror she experienced, but it won't hurt.

...the more I understand why she thought the guy with the camera was up to no good.

In the years since social media has become a dominant force, women have learned that sometimes, a group of men will rape a woman, record the crime on video, and share it online as a kind of trophy.

Now she sees her friend being hit on by a drunk slob. He leaves and comes back with handcuffs, then attacks her friend in public. None of the men in attendance - despite the stereotype of the drinking man who loves to "kick ass," especially when it's an opportunity to impress women - none of them attack the soon-to-be-rapist.

None of the men are helping her friend. Now one of them is filming the attack. I can see why she didn't automatically assume he was a good guy.

Kudos to your daughter... I know I go down swinging if faced with that situation.

I was once waiting for my father at a drug store and his prescription wasn't ready. We had noticed a drunk who wandered from the local neighborhood bar outside of the drug store. When he knew he was going to have to wait he told the clerk he was going to go outside to tell me and check on the drunk. The clerk got all excited and worried about me and my dad laughed, and told her, "No, I'm more worried about the drunk if he tried anything."

This statement is spot-on....

"If men feared that every time they tried to physically force a woman to do their bidding they might up in an emergency room, how long do you think it would take men to stop using violence against women to get their way?"

Couldn't agree more...

I was on the road, just getting back into town early that Sunday morning, and they got home soon after I did.

My daughter came in the front door with dried blood stains all over her white blouse, and said, "Don't worry Dad, none of it's mine."

I raised her to not ever let anyone lay a hand on her that she didn't want to, and she learned her lesson well.

The jerk was charged with assault and battery and was prosecuted for it.

But I've been laughing about this for at least fifteen minutes, and I think I can explain why now.

This line is absolutely hilarious to me.

He asserted that the arrest was proper since Ball had been “resisting.”

Obviously that is the worst possible word you could choose given the situation. The drunken ass tried to pick up a girl, and was rebuffed, and then he reacted like the thug he was. Yes, she was resisting the advances of an old drunken ass. But if you spent a week tasting the flavor of words, trying to pick the worst possible word you could use in that situation to attempt to defend your deputy, you could not pick a worse word than that.

Public Pressure is mentioned by a response above. That and the Sheriff had no legal leg to stand on since his Deputy was prohibited by his status from arresting anyone. So defending the arrest as proper would be problematic. It took time for the good old boys network to get the word, and the public pressure was the cherry on top.

But I still say it's a hilarious choice of a word. Resisting.

Unfortunately this is all to common now days, so many cops with badges are out of control, they think that they can do whatever they want. I hope she takes him to court and sues his ass.

54. Why Do We Have Sheriff's?

I know, rural areas need law enforcement but these departments so often run amok because nobody holds Sheriff's accountable. Just look at Maricopa County, Arizona.

I have posted many times when incidents like this happens, law enforcement recruits the wrong kind of people into their ranks. The motto may be to "protect and serve" but the actions all too often neglects the "serve" part and who they protect is themselves rather than those they are supposed to serve. As a result people live in fear of those that are supposed to be there to protect. That was in play big time here as nobody would come to the aid of this poor woman out of fear of what would happen to them and I am not talking about the physical part either. We need to break the grip law enforcement has over ordinary citizens, especially when the crime is being committed by the officers. Rogue cops need to be thrown under the bus and I would put the Sheriff in this case in that category as well.

the police, or asked anyone else to call the police. Was he just going to stay there forever with the girl in handcuffs? What was he planning to do?

The publicity might bring complaints forward from other women.

However this fucker took it too far. Just because she refused his advances?? Bull Shit!! Glad he was stripped of his badge, however he needs to be arrested as a sexual offender for feeling her up while man handling her!! She could have used her Marine skills to floor him, however she restrained herself, to not be a disgrace to her country. He did it instead. I hope he rots!!!

I wonder how this would have played out without video evidence? We probably wouldn't be hearing about it. In some places, she would have went to jail for assaulting a police officer, and even been beaten into a coma.
