A Governors Last Campaign To Prove Health Law WorksSome 34,000 had begun applications, and more than 11,000 had signed up for plans, making Kentucky one of the most successful state-run insurance marketplaces under the new federal health care law. You are all doing a fantastic job, Mr. Beshear told two dozen bleary-eyed workers. My message to Kentuckians is simply this, Mr. Beshear said in his office in the State Capitol. You dont have to like the president; you dont have to like me. Because this isnt about him, and its not about me. Its about you, your family and your children. So do yourself a favor. Find what you can get for yourself. Youre going to like what you find. Kentucky is the only Southern state to operate its own insurance exchange as well as expand Medicaid coverage for the poor.
To me this was a moral decision, he said. Weve got 640,000 Kentuckians who dont have access to any kind of affordable health care. The last ranking I saw, were 44th out of 50 in health status. You take any chronic disease or condition heart disease, cancer, smoking, obesity, you name it and were either the worst or close to the worst. He also said the law made economic sense, citing a state-commissioned study that found that an expansion of Medicaid over eight years would create a $15.6 billion economic impact and almost 17,000 new jobs. Most of these critics are going to end up with egg on their face, the governor predicted. People are finding that I can get health insurance for the first time in my life that I can afford. Theyre going to look back at these folks after all the dust settles and say, You misled us.

(18,672 posts)giving a critical side eye about the numerous reports about the "glitches" of the Obamacare websites? WTF? I'm really, really suspicious about this particular brand of bad press. It may all and well be difficult to sign up right now, but I'm sort of baffled as to why? We all know that this stuff can be fixed (look at Facebook eBay and other extremely high-traffic sites), so what is the deal?

(18,219 posts)It is interesting that I just heard that suspicion from an email friend. In discussing what the problems could be with the system, he suggested that the GOP or one of their many organizations was making a concerted effort to keep the website from functioning. Although I believe that this is possible, I thought it was highly unlikely or the Obama administration would be making the attacks public. And I hope that they would.

(7,887 posts)Bush appointed how many people during his time in office? He appointed people to review climate change documents who re-wrote them to delete things that proved global warming was a scientific fact.
Lots of people working for the government who really don't believe that government can be effective. I swear some people become welfare workers just so they can lose people's case work and make them jump through hoops to get assistance.
CIA. NSA. People still loyal to the previous administration.

IF it isn't known yet WHO did it, admitting it was done could cause panic.

I know you did this because you care about the people in your state, but I want you to know the whole world is watching how DEMs and the Party of NO behave. You are an inspiration - a Democrat writ BIG D. Your fierce stand PRO ACA I hope benefits your state to such a high degree that there will be no doubt anywhere that this is a good START on healthcare reform and to vast cost savings for the government and citizens.

(7,887 posts)THIS is the connection to the people that rethugs try to fake by rolling up their flannel shirts and picking up a ax to pose in the woods.
This Gov is connected to his people because he gives a shit about their lives whether they voted for him or not.

(18,219 posts)judge people by what they do instead of what they say. And it is easy to see that the Republicans are all talk and show, but no substance to back it up.
And you are right, we both know that a lot of the people who will benefit from his decision did not vote for him. But he cares.

(35,293 posts)I like that. Short. Pithy. Folksy.
Of course, "greed is good" is shorter, but possibly too concise. Then there are all the negative connotations for the word "greed" and the poignant clash of meanings, the connotational "greed is bad" coupled with the denialist assertion that "greed is good" can be a bit jarring, semiotically speaking.
"Find what you can get for youself." Pitched properly. Just the right level for the target audience. Truly. words to live by. It's what Jesus would say.
And that's why the critics will wind up with egg on their face. Because while many will dismiss the thinking behind "greed is good", they still act as they though believe it and assume that, really, getting is godliness. Only a fool turns down free money--all the more so when accepting the free money has a nice moralistic ring, "I'm doing it for the children."

(594 posts)Is about you......, how much this reminds me of a Senator filled with ideals and with a determined progressive agenda.. This phrase was part of his acceptance speech in 2008.
Love him then, still love him now. Just wish he could say these words more often.

Excellent quote from Gov Beshear to get the people of Kentucky on board with ACA! Thank you, she~

Gov Steve Beshear of Kentucky, I can't help but give Kudos to the man. People first!
Despite the lingering effects of the recession, USA Today rated Kentucky 4th overall for personal income growth in the past year. In Forbes' fifth-annual rankings of best places to do business, the Commonwealth improved by 12 places in 2010 from 2009, the country's third-highest improvement. Kentucky's business tax climate ranking rose faster than any other state, up 15 spots in two years to 19th in The Tax Foundation's 2011 State Business Tax Climate Index.

(57,936 posts)We in California are doing OK ourselves.
After two weeks of open enrollment, Californians have started nearly 95,000 applications for health insurance through the state's new exchange.
Covered California, the state marketplace, announced the latest figures Tuesday and it said consumer interest in the federal healthcare law remains strong.
State officials had previously reported 43,616 complete and partial applications for the first five days of enrollment through Oct. 5. These latest numbers would indicate more than 50,000 new applications through Oct. 12.

And we still have a couple of months for the story to get out. People have to find their documents, and they will want to hear from others who have signed up so they can know what to expect when it comes to cost and benefits.

(1,918 posts)Due to my migraines and mini-strokes, I could not find anyone to insure me at a price I could afford. I used to fear that one day, I would have another mini- stroke that would hospitalize me yet again and I wouldn't be able to pay my tab. Then they would insist that I get another MRI to make sure there was no permanent damage.
I have never wanted to be a burden to anyone, especially John Q. Public who wouldn't know me from Eve. I just wanted to make sure that I could be an asset to society. Some may consider the ACA to be socialized medicine (it isn't), but I want to do my part to make sure no one else has to go through what I went through. I finally got insurance through my job and am more than happy to allow any extra taxes I may pay to subsidize someone in my old shoes. We have to take care of each other. Life is too precious.
I do good in the world and can only hope that I can pay it forward.
