"ROME (CBSDC) The pope is selling his hog.
The National Catholic Register reports that Pope Francis is selling his Harley-Davidson motorcycle to raise money to help the homeless in Rome.
It is a precious gift that has once again made us happy in feeling the closeness of our bishop to the poor of the Church of Rome, Monsignor Enrico Feroci, director of Caritas Rome, said. We are deeply grateful to Pope Francis for this."

(5,105 posts)Why doesn't he direct his church to sell off some of their vast art and real estate holdings to actually accomplish something?

(17,469 posts)But a Pope riding a Harley is a pretty cool image.
Then I can see a whole gang of nuns riding Harleys.
Hell, there's a Tarrantino move in there somewhere.

So the best answer would be to do both, one for the personal sacrifice and the other for the larger volume of funds it would raise.

(22,308 posts)Even at a buck a ticket, you could easily make millions since so many people would want a shot at winning the Pope's bike.
The ticket itself would be a keepsake.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
