Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have officially seen it all: Vagina cakes for baby showers
Seriously? We have women all over the world who can barely find enough food for themselves, never mind the baby they are delivering in squalor, and people in this country are making vagina cakes?
Somebody PLEASE tell me this is a hoax.

(Yes as a medic in the Mexican Red Cross I helped deliver a few babies, or as I like to call it, assisted mom in her pushing the baby out. When there are no complications we are there as the ra ra team. Now we had complications a couple of times, and those WERE SCARY MOMENTS for all concerned)

Actually, you are right, they need to add some vernix by using opaque-ish frosting all over the head

I'm sure there are feminists who are far purer than I am who find this sort of thing a celebration of womanhood.
Thanks anyway, but I prefer the ones from a gentler era, when there were frosting booties on top or something equally cutesy.
I suppose there will be afterbirth cakes next. And yes, I've already seen one.

Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)and irrelevant.
I mean, by that logic, ANY cake for a baby shower would be a problem, because there are women and babies in squalor. Not just a vagina cake.
I think the objections to this are probably aesthetic, not to mention the serious medical and biological inaccuracy.
But I have to believe someone is putting someone on. Or else they've got a wicked sense of humor.
Kelvin Mace
(17,469 posts)they have nine more cakes in a similar vein, so not a joke.
A celebration of a coming birth with friends and a cake? Not really a problem, nor terribly expensive. But to expend 3-5 times the financial resources on that monstrosity...
Sorry, just strikes me as inappropriate conspicuous consumption.

Am I just weird for thinking that symbolically cutting up a woman's genitals AND her new born child is just disturbing?

(1,508 posts)What difference does it make what shape the cake is in? You might as well be saying how dare anyone eat cake at all, considering all the starving people in the world.
Ridiculous outrage over absolutely nothing.
Kelvin Mace
(17,469 posts)We put this cake out, then we take a knife and symbolically cut up a woman's vagina AND her child.
Oooohh, can I have a slice of labia and a quarter of the baby's skull?
Strikes me as a bit inappropriate.

(1,508 posts)Do you think of SpongeBob cake is traumatic for children because you're cutting up SpongeBob? Or what about picture cakes with people on them? Are you symbolically murdering them?
C'mon. It's a novelty cake.
Kelvin Mace
(17,469 posts)As to cakes with people on them, to be honest, I wouldn't do it.
As satire this is funny. As an actual baby shower food, it is tacky, and rather revolting.
But that is just me.
pipi_k
(21,020 posts)IMO.
Anybody ever actually SEEN a baby being born?
Of course!
There is no way on earth a full term baby's head is that much smaller than the "door" he's passing through.
If that cake is disturbing, the reality would be way more disturbing if it were portrayed correctly.
That being said, though...
I love cake. I'd probably ask for a piece with the most frosting on it.
PS..and on closer examination, it looks like the baby's head is emerging from the labia minora, not the actual vaginal opening below it.

pipi_k
(21,020 posts)wouldn't necessarily have to see a baby being born to figure it out, especially if they're old enough to have made a baby in the first place.
There is just no opening on the human body large enough to permit full term baby Whack-a-mole.
