(29,414 posts)My girlfriend, a New Zealander, wants to move here instead of me moving there. And not only that. She wants to move to Texas! (She fell in love with The Texas Hill Country after only one five-day visit.)
How's that for selling us?
truebluegreen
(9,033 posts)I'm not sure what that proves, but I don't think it is your point.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)Plus, she isn't one to judge people based on where they live, something that could go a long way on DU
truebluegreen
(9,033 posts)All I know is living in a foreign country, even one with a common language, can wear on a person after a while.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)And she's a good judge of things, not to mention my previous statement of not judging people by where they live. DU still has that problem...
truebluegreen
(9,033 posts)are you trying to imply that I am judging people by where they live?
kentauros
(29,414 posts)in a different direction with it; I'm not seeing it if you meant something else:
"I'm betting it is you she knows, not Texas or the US."
She knows enough about Texas through me, my parents, my family, and other people she knows that live here. Plus, her visit showed her plenty of what's important to her, not us. We've been influenced by the politics and all that nastiness. I'd rather not pop her bubble. It would be rude, and I'm not a rude Texan
truebluegreen
(9,033 posts)Do you, your family and friends = Texas, or the US?
kentauros
(29,414 posts)She has plenty of friends around the world, including the US. Politics is never a subject of discussion. I'm the same way, except here. I don't discuss politics with anyone else but one friend. So, I don't speak ill of either my home state or my home country (or my home planet.)
So, I guess I made your point if you ignore all of my other points about her also loving the US, the state of Texas, my family, her friends here, and then me. That's a lot to ignore to make a point...
truebluegreen

(29,414 posts)we allow the beauty of a place, beyond simply the geography, to come through. I'd rather experience the good of every place on the planet than to go there expecting the worst due to others telling me to expect the worst. Texas is a great state! And the US is a great country! If you look at it without the negative filters, then you might be amazed at what you see

(36,385 posts)The conservatives in NZ are nowhere near as conservative as US Republicans. I don't live in either NZ or the US, but if I had a choice NZ would win hands down with its universal healthcare, pensions, far superior work conditions, and other things like that which are pretty much the same as where I am. I'd be guessing she's moving there because of you, and if you weren't in the picture she'd be content with thinking that bit of Texas she fell in love with was a great place to visit again sometime...

Plenty of great things and plenty to criticize in this country. Pretending there's nothing wrong does not make it so. Even if we were the greatest country in the world, that doesn't mean we couldn't improve.

Ranchemp.
(1,991 posts)still preservers in it's moral obligation to democracy and we are a can do nation.
Violet_Crumble
(36,385 posts)The idea of American Exceptionalism was a driving force behind the Bush Doctrine, which was all about the mindset of the US being so exceptional that it could act unilaterally while demanding other countries didn't, imposing 'democratic' regime change on other countries that the US deemed a potential threat to it, preventative war and a host of other nasty stuff.
http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/nsc/nss/2006/print/index.html
I'm guessing yr talking about how the US is better or unique in some way other countries aren't. I can think of one or two things where it's exceptional in a negative way compared to other First World countries (lack of universal healthcare, the gun thing) but I can't think of any positive ones that other countries wouldn't share...

(18,881 posts)But being humans in one of the greatest countries on earth, we are lucky enough to have been given the luxury of seeing where we could improve. On the matter of survival, I could furnish an entire place for free with high quality goods by simply answering Craigslist ads and being able to get hold of a truck to pick up the stuff (and most of us could do this easily in America). I could dumpster dive in Seattle and get the best food imaginable - my daughter once brought home crates of food I couldn't afford to buy that she'd found in dumpsters (sealed and spoil-free). You just need to know where to go. Yes, we live in an amazing country. Those of us living here have already hit the lottery. But we need to be aware of those who want to drag us back into the Stone Age, and fight them whenever they pop up.

(36,385 posts)I have never had the desire to live there, and never will. And it's not the best and most amazing country in the world, coz there's no country that's the best and most amazing. And when it comes to truth, that was sorely lacking during the Bush era. As for equal opportunity, it looks like it's sorely lacking for some minorities in some parts of the US. And don't get me started on US foreign policy...
Y'know, you can be happy you moved somewhere without making out that anyone who lives somewhere else is in some way inferior and missing out on some great experience. I know I've got things much better living where I am than if I'd been born in or moved to the US...
