Shithead of the Year:Men’s rights activist explains why it’s OK to not care about female rape victim

The leader of an online men’s right group defended comments made by his hand-picked successor, who said he lacked empathy for rape victims.

Paul Elam, founder of the website A Voice For Men, complained that feminists had conspired to underreport incidences of male rape and promote the victimhood of female rape victims.

“I don’t find it particularly hyperbolic for a man to say, ‘I’m not gonna give a damn about female rape victims anymore,’” Elam said in a video posted Sunday on YouTube. “They have tons of money, of law enforcement, of special programs funded by the government, of social consciousness – schools have Take Back The Night rallies, everything you can possibly think of.”

Elam was responding to a profile published Sunday by The Daily Beast about John “The Other” Hembling, who was quoted as saying in a video that he didn’t “give a f*** about rape victims anymore.”

This is absolutely outrageous. These two "men" need STFU. I'm all for free speech, but this kind of misogynistic bullshit adds nothing to any discussion. Hell, for these two I'd support the return of public flogging.

I would be willing to bet there is a woman somewhere that has had an incident with this turd.

To make such a callous statement indicates issues much deeper than his feelings of being "harmed" politically and socially by feminism. I doubt these two had much credibility to begin with, but they're below zero now IMO.

That lack of empathy shows up in everything I've ever seen from these people, no matter who it is.

They are so self-absorbed in THEIR rights, nobody else deserves any consideration.

Hope they like talking to themselves.

From what I've read from them, the opinion of this guy doesn't seem entirely reflective of the paper.

It also used to be a pop culture magazine before they shifted to more serious news.

I am not involved in the "men's rights" movement in any way, but I can at least grant that there may be some issues they pursue that are worthy of discussion. However, statements like the one this jerk made are beyond the pale and should be denounced by all men as the misogynistic and hurtful garbage that it is.

So yeah, they don't speak for all men, but hopefully the ones who listen to them are repulsed by this and look to other sources.

not to care about them. Unless you lack empathy for women to begin with - in which case the problem is with you, not female rape victims.

Rape culture is dangerous and detrimental to men as well. Fighting it means fighting it when men are assaulted as well.

Though I figure they're actually more interested in hating women than actually fixing the problems.

I don't believe for a minute they are concerned about male rape victims. As you note, the MRAsma's primary impulse is hatred of women, nothing more.

They started out a number of years back as help for custody cases-- my husband, who ended up with custody of his two daughters, received legal aid from one of those early groups. I remember walking in the office with wife and the paralegal saying "what did the c*** do now?"

Given the beginnings it's not surprising they evolved into hate groups.

And brother to 3 sisters, I can only be completely disgusted. I find it ironic and ultimately very odd that the "men's rights" movement seems to be spearheaded by members of the most privileged group in all of history, white men. Insanity.
