Repubs Want An APOLOGY, WH DENIES Durbin's Story

Earlier a diary here updated the now infamous remark Sen. Durbin claims he heard.
http://www.dailykos.com/...

Now Boehner and Cantor want an apology from Durbin for this remark

Durbin wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday that a House GOP leader said "I cannot even stand to look at you" to President Obama during a negotiations over the federal government shutdown

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/...

This seems like such an odd way for this story to be playing out.

Why did it take so long for the WH to say it didn't happen?

Why (according to Kat68's diary) did Press Secretary Carney go from saying "somebody" denied to "participants" denying it?

Why did it take so long for the republicans to say it didnt happen and want an apology?

Did Durbin make a false statement or did he misunderstand what someone said?

How do you misunderstand that kind of statement?

Durbin wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday that a House GOP leader said "I cannot even stand to look at you" to President Obama during a negotiations over the federal government shutdown

I just don't think Durbin lied. But I do think he is going to be made to eat dirt for all this.

solid soldier out to dry after that soldier made public inappropriate behavior toward the President. There is NO fucking high road to be taken here, call the god-damned republican leader who made the statement out. Back Durbin, he wouldn't randomly make something this serious up out of thin air.

else telling the story. (After the shutdown, there were no meetings including Obama, Durbin and the GOP house leaders).

The other one is that the White House was never going to acknowledge the lack of respect of somebody in the Oval Office or the White House. It is one thing to have a goon say something racist in a meeting. Acknowledging that a GOP leader was disrespectful is another. It ruins the prestige of the president.

The other problem is that I remember other instance where Durbin said things like that. He is never direct and we can never know whether it is something that happened or an image for the general disrespect.

So, yes, because Durbin embarrassed the White House, he probably will have to eat dirt (hopefully, he will not have to apologize to the GOP).

and all republican leadership. The statement could have been made then. The President must get the White House to change course, if he doesn't I am perfectly ok with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi stepping forward to correct the record. I don't think Durbin would just make shit up, especially something of the magnitude that Durbin mentioned, Durbin DESERVES FULL SUPPORT from the President.

people still not learned that no matter how much Dems back down for them, which Dems have doing for years now, it makes NO DIFFERENCE, they will lie and cheat and refuse to acknowledge the concessions made.

The ONLY thing bullies understand is CONFRONTATION.

The WH should have said nothing. Let them rail and whine.

It would NOT make the President look bad if this turned out to be true.

What kind of thinking is that?

It would make THEM look bad. Even moderate Conservatives will agree that the Office of the President should be respected.

I have no idea if it is true or not, but I don't understand why Durbin would make up something like that. So for now, I'm going with it being true.

There were probably others there also. The President may not have HEARD it, and that's all the WH should say.

Maybe Durbin got the "exacts" wrong, but he definitely got the mood right, as has been expressed by the Republican Party and especially the Tea Party on numerous occasions.

Let's not forget what is REALLY important here - the Repuke are the ones that shut down the government!

The Tea Partiers I have to deal with in my personal life act the same way. They say the most abhorrent and disrespectful things in private, but once they get called out publicly they deny such a thing ever happened and they start demanding apologies.

Durbin should not apologize under any circumstances. Letting them off the hook only emboldens them to keep getting more extreme in private. Our president does not deserve this level of disrespect.
