Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.

This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.

3. If you haven't seen "The Cove," I recommend it, also. It won for best documentary.

It covers, not as thoroughly, some aspects of the dolphin entertainment industry, too.

It's so obvious, in retrospect, that is cruel and inhumane to keep these majestic animals penned up in such small spaces their entire lives. What on earth were we all thinking paying to see them "perform"? So sad....

and was like WTF? All I could think of was 'shut the fuck up already, we get it, you are being paid to represent seaworld DUH'. I think the host was getting irate with him as well. I thought Jack Hanna was some big conservation guy or something. Guess not.

I'm already horrified at our treatment of cetaceans. Nuh-uh. Commodification of animals is beyond what I can stomach.
