Any "LIBERAL" associating with these people can go fuck themselves.

(35,862 posts)On the one advertising sign, it struck me as a "Hitler" 'stache.
Here, it strikes me as a redo of what I think of as the canonical "Big Brother" poster--man's mustachioed face with no background, "Big Brother" above and "is watching you" below. Googled some images, and they're similar.
Also saw a poster nearly as salient with a non-mustachioed man. And parallel Obama and Bush II posters.
Perhaps seeing that poster in "Being Human" when I watched it on DVD last July made the allusion fresher in my memory. Context matters.
In this case, it's probably a 1984 allusion, "Obama = Big Brother" assertion, using a pre-made poster because they were available and could be repurposed. Of course, no real DUer could ever think that the Obama administration in any way, shape, or form exceeds the limits of what's proper when spying on any citizen of the world.
(Wait. Isn't that the "no true Scotsman" fallacy?)

You caught me. It was a brilliant ruse, but your clever detective work has discovered that I, again an avowed socialist, am working with FreedomWorks, the Oathkeepers, Glenn Beck, and Justin Amash to undermine progressivism and bring forth a fascist Nazi Marxist atheist theocratic gold-based Empire.
I mean, sure, it might have seemed downright stupid that a socialist would have been allied with Glenn Beck, but you didn't let that stop you! You took that red pill and uncovered our meticulous plans. Curse the LaRouchian moron that used that stupid Obama-Hitler poster! He gave us all away.

(16,184 posts)And before I was found out, I would've argued that just because Glenn Beck supports something (likely because it involves opposing Obama), it doesn't mean I agree with him or agree on the same premises.
I, for example, could have said that I cherish my civil liberties. Glenn Beck would've said Obama is going to use the NSA to inject white Americans with nanobots to sterilize them and track their every movement.
So both I and Beck would have supported the rally. However, he would have supported it for batshit crazy reasons, and I for completely legitimate concerns.
But if you'll excuse me, I have some nanobots to resist.

Glenn Beck is fucking crazy. He opposes anything Obama does ever. This event is generally in opposition to the NSA under Obama. Therefore, Glenn Beck opposes it.
I'm against the NSA's activities under Obama. Therefore I disagree with him on this issue. I don't oppose everything he does ever.

(881 posts)That's why Salon ran an article warning liberals not to attend.
Stop trying to defend the indefensible.
This is an abandonment of core principles, in my view, out of anger over Edward Snowdens still-recent revelations about the National Security Agency and its spying activity, particularly domestic access to telephone and online networks and metadata. It represents trading long-held beliefs in social and economic justice for a current hot-button issue that while clearly of concern to all Americans doesnt come close to trumping a host of other issues areas that require the long game of electoral politics and organizing. Going all in with the libertarian purists is a fatal and unnecessary compromise; reform is clearly needed, but the presence of anti-government laissez-faire wingers at the beating heart of the privacy movement will surely sour the very political actors that movement desperately needs to make actual and not symbolic, link bait progress in its fight.
Or libertarianism itself will rise, and our loss of liberty will be greater still. Thats because libertarianism is a form of authoritarianism disguised in a narrow slice of civil liberties. In trumpeting the all-knowing, ever wise wonders of the totally free and unencumbered market, it bestows all the power on those with access to capital. You may say were there already, but under a pure libertarian system, things would get much worse.
