What will the Affordable Care Act mean for retirees?
SUZANNE SOMERS: As a writer of 24 books mostly on health and wellness and by using my celebrity to get to the best and brightest doctors, scientists and medical professionals in the alternative and integrative health-care world, I have come to the following conclusions:
First of all, lets call affordable health care what it really is: Its socialized medicine.
Ive had an opportunity to watch the Canadian version of affordable health care in action with all its limitations with my Canadian husbands family. A few years ago, I was startled to see the cover of Macleans, a national Canadian magazine, showing a picture of a dog on an examining table with the headline, Your Dog Can Get Better Health Care Than You. It went on to say that young Canadian medical students have no incentive to become doctors to humans because they cant make any money. Instead, there is a great surge of Canadian students becoming veterinarians. Thats where the money is. A Canadian animal can have timely MRIs, surgeries and any number of tests it needs to receive quality health care.
My sister-in-law had to wait two months to get a General Practitioner. During this period she spent her days in bed vomiting continuously, unable to get any food or drink down because she couldnt get an appointment with the doctor. When she finally did, the doctor said, Oh you dont need me, you need a specialist. That took another two weeks until she got a pill that corrected the problem.

Suzanne Somers is promoting an incredibly dangerous message according to many medical professionals and the American Cancer Society. In her latest book she argues that chemotherapy does not work for most cancers and that patients should turn to alternative medicine instead. This is something shes believed for a long time when she had breast cancer ten years ago, she chose to undergo radiation along with a lumpectomy. Since shes doing okay, thats evidence to Somers that chemotherapy is unnecessary for breast cancer. She also recently said that chemo killed Patrick Swayze, not pancreatic cancer.
Somers has some very extreme views on the lengths shell go to in order to remain looking and feeling young and healthy. She messes around with complex bioidentical hormones and pops over 60 pills a day. In January she was on Oprah espousing her ideals, and frankly she came off as a whack job. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt at the time, but in hindsight I should not have. Shes careful about phrasing things in terms of this is just what I think I should do, you have to make your own choice, but saying things like chemo kills, not cancer, shows thats not what she really believes.
And health professionals are saying shes downright dangerous. Here are some excerpts from the Huffington Posts article about Somers medical advice.
Suzanne Somers is at it again. Less than a year after the former sitcom actress frustrated mainstream doctors (and cheered some fans) by touting bioidentical hormones on The Oprah Winfrey Show, shes back with a new book. This ones on an even more emotional topic: Cancer treatment. Specifically, she argues against what she sees as the vast and often pointless use of chemotherapy.

In a web feature titled "The Experts," the Wall Street Journal ran a column today called "The Affordable Care Act Is a Socialist Ponzi Scheme."
The author is Suzanne Somers, whom millennials might recognize from her starring role on ABC's family-oriented '90s sitcom "Step By Step."
Somers warns:
Medical care will be degraded, the costs will skyrocket, and most frightening of all, your most intimate and personal information is now up for grabs. And then there is another consideration: Its the dark underbelly of the Affordable Care Act reminiscent of what Lenin and Churchill both said. Lenin: Socialized medicine is the keystone to the arch of the socialist state. Churchill: Control your citizens health care and you control your citizens.
Philip Bump and Jonathan Chait have both written takedowns noting, politely, that the piece does not provide the sort of airtight argument you might expect from the star of the first five seasons of "Three's Company."

(2,899 posts)My husband and I are both 60 this year. Here in the USA we pay almost $1500 a month in medical insurance premiums.
I have had major surgeries this year, and even with this expensive insurance, I have had to wait for many months, in pain, to see specialists.
It looks like we're going to save $1,000 a month with Obama care!!!!

The next time I go over I'm going to mention this to some of my friends in the Dominion of Canada...including one whose life was saved by triple-bypass open heart surgery in a Canadian hospital, no "waiting list," and he wasn't bankrupted.

(26,467 posts)funny, I have tons of colleagues from the UK and Canada at work, and every single one of them loves the health care they have.
the myth about waiting a long time for surgery, my Canadian friend told me, was maybe because sometimes you (might) have to wait a month or two for elective surgery (say there's a small wait for a knee replacement, for example) if they were swamped. they would never deny care to a sick person or someone who would perish without medical attention.

Dr Somers, what is your prescription?
Are you afraid that the ACA, which unfortunately comes nowhere near being true "socialised medicine," will lessen the profits on the 24 books you've written?
And consider the source: The Wall Street Journal, the most ardently right-wing, pro-big business publication in the country. My wife's former boss, a bank CFO, used to read it on the shitter. No joke.

(8,646 posts)Her sister in law had to wait 2 months to get a GP? Let's read into that shall we?
She had to wait 2 months to get a GP. Yes, there are waits for getting in with a family doctor IN A FEW AREAS in the entire country. THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN'T SEE A DOCTOR! Her SIL must be as dumb as shit, because at any time she could've made an appointment to go to a 24-hour mediclinic or gone to the ER. For free. And in the end, she got to see a specialist in 2 weeks and got her cure. FOR FREE. Instead, she was too fucking stupid to haul herself to either a mediclinic or and ER and CHOSE....let me reiterate that...CHOSE to suffer until she got in to a GP.
This Canadian says Suzanne Somers is a TFM and knows shit about our system.

(8,646 posts)I used to live far away from my parents...in another province. Everytime we went for a visit, never failed, one of my kids would get sick. Once it was the norovirus that wouldn't quit, once it was scarlet fever, once I started bleeding while pregnant....I NEVER HAD TO WAIT TO SEE A GP. I went to the walk-in mediclinic once, the ER once, and the local doctor's office (was not my family doctor or GP but saw my daughter anyway, no questions asked). We got looked after right away - no one asked if we had a GP, no one refused to see us, no one said, "Wait until you have a GP". We walked in, we got examined, we got the tests we needed and we went home, no charge.
The ONLY reason her SIL had to wait is because her SIL is a fucking moron. The end.

but making lies about our system is just plain pathetic.
I haven't had a GP(Family Doctor) for over a decade - but NEVER denied care for even the simplest ailment.
I live in a small town where the aging population (I'm part of that) has strained our GPs to the point where they cannot take any more patients -
BUT they all take turns covering our emergency ward sort of like a clinic - larger towns/cities have permanent clinics - sometime you might have to wait an hour or so, but our triage system makes certain that the more serious ailments get taken care of first.
If you go in for a painful ingrown toenail, you may have to wait many hours while Doctors and nurses take care of burns, broken bones, heart pain, etc., BUT YOU WILL GET YOUR TOENAIL TAKEN CARE OF!
Heck, I even got an ambulance ride in minutes just for severe diarrhea, so bad I figured I wouldn't make the 5 mile drive without shitting myself, and certainly was not going to call a cab or a friend to shit their vehicle up.
I was diagnosed quickly, vitals and blood work done, then x-rays (in video mode no less) - given some medication, and fed a good meal 3 hours later, observed for 2 hours then sent home.
My cost - NOT ONE DIME - well, except fr the cab ride home - $10.
The meal and meds were worth more than that . . .
On the dog thing Chrissy - YA GOTTA PAY BIG BUCKS FOR THAT - doh!
And either your sister-in-law is as dumb as Chrissy, or that story is just baloney.
By the way, our healthcare is funded through taxes on our paychecks, of which I have had none (paychecks) for over 5 years - Welfare, then a small pension - -
I'm covered the same as anyone else.
Dis be Canada, Chrissy - -
