(5,924 posts)Why our TSA doesn't just emulate Israeli airport security is beyond me.

(14,732 posts)Israeli airport security is very labor intensive. You are closely questioned at very great length (20 minutes is not unusual) trying to spot any inconsistencies, nervousness, etc. by one or more highly trained agents. To do it on the scale of the US would require thousands of trained agents, not the ('I didn't get the job I wanted on the garbage truck so I joined the TSA') workers we now have, and would in addition require tremendous amounts of time to board any flight. You'd probably have to get to the airport at least 3 hours ahead for a domestic flight. Doubt the travelling public would put up with it. But I agree with the point you're making about needing better screeners.

(21,786 posts)if you go to a major airport with direct flights to Israel you'll see signs on the concourse; "El Al passengers for Tel Aviv please arrive three hours before your scheduled flight", or something similar, because of the enhanced security process.

(39,961 posts)that actually works over one that has now proven to be ineffective. I've always been against the scanners, and now that we know they don't work, we all know this was a money grab by the manufacturers of these machines. I wouldn't put it past them to have set up the underwear bomber just so that they could make money.
If it would require thousands of trained agents, so be it. Goodness knows we need the jobs.
I don't understand why they don't use dogs. Bomb sniffing dogs are incredibly efficient.

(2,605 posts)at least that is what he implies on his blog, not that I think he is wrong about the body scanners...

(39,961 posts)I just think it needs to be a hell of a lot more effective. So far these machines were a dreadful waste of tax payer money.

(8,693 posts). . . and I don't get this. Every airport I"ve been to has a preliminary metal detector you go through and then the full body scan.

don't get your hopes up on this one

(53,795 posts)He's providing a great, patriotic service doing this expose, but I think it's insane to hand over policing power to private firms. If someone has power over me, which airport security must have, I want them personally answerable to elected officials and the rule of law.
