(45,851 posts)It's rather like naval warfare, there are only two kinds of vessels, submarines and targets.
Well, in American politics there are only punchers and punchees.
With the punchees being hippies of course.

(96,882 posts)Setting aside the notion that "Centrist" doesn't automatically mean "corporate", it's extremely unlikely. At best you'd have one center-left/lenter/right Party and two marginal fringe Parites, but I think our political structure really doesn't allow for it.

(34,845 posts)The GOP/Tea Party/Libertarian group still has no one with charisma or intelligence to lead. Only self-defeating demagogues like Ted Cruz.
We have Obama. And while he could definitely use a lot more help, he's pretty awesome compared to the other side.

(14,498 posts)1. Corporate DEM and GOP can easily amalgamate. Not much keeping them apart, near as I can tell. Nothing of consequence, anyway. Differences over race and sex and sexual orientation discrimination... all formerly in the way..... have fallen away. Money, power and hierarchy is what matters and they are of one mind here: these things must be preserved.
2. Then you have the legit DEM. ( That's most of us here, apparently.)
3. Finally the cultural conservative.... heretofore Republican.... right. Unlike Category 1.... some elements here can be educated... esp. as regards economic ( and maybe even foreign policy) issues.

(11,619 posts)For there to be four working parties, you'd have to split the electorate more evenly. There are actually far more than four parties now. Just off the top of my head,The Democratic Party, Republican Party, Libertarian Party, and Green Party exist in most of the 50 states. Neither the Green nor libertarian actually elect very many people and they don't even register in Presidential elections. There are a bunch of other parties in every state, that rarely, if ever, elect anyone. So I don't see how we can suddenly be a four party system.

(147 posts)problem. We will know what is down the road after the budget fiasco. I was at this Halloween Party last night in Santa Monica. I got to talking to this guy named Kerr Smith, who was in this tv show called Dawson's Creek (something like that--I don't watch tv). He was a real nice guy and we talked about politics for about 45 minutes. He too said he thought there would be four parties but thought the Republican Party would be very much diminished, which I do too. We had to stop talking when the Zombies arrived from another bar. The guy was really smart and I enjoyed talking to him. Just another gorilla talking to a zombie.

(3,922 posts)I would really support the Left/Progressives if they did that.
I think a better idea, however, would be taking special interest big money (PACs, Super PACs, etc.) out of politics.

(19,429 posts)First, only about half the electorate votes.
Second, if there is a block of about 26% of the voters, they can elect their candidate in the primary.
Third, the 26% can ally with another 25% of the voters to elect their candidate in the general.
Operationally, it is even less than 1/8 due to the way that party organizations control the nomination of party candidates for the primary election.
