Actually work is a Biblical punishment

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+3

17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’

“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”

end of quote

I was watching Chris Hayes tonight and he had the Congressman who was talking about the Biblical blessing of work and specifically mentioned God having Adam and Eve work the Garden of Eden. That is the exact opposite of what went down in the Bible. I am no Biblical scholar but even I knew this story.

If you examine the Genesis passage more closely, the work that's more of a punishment is backbreaking, exploitative, and sometimes thankless. On top of that, humans were going to work their buns' off, sometimes to no avail, until they eventually die.

Note that it also mentions, in a poetic way, that Adam, and by extension, Eve and their posterity, were eventually going to die.

19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”
