Source: Buzzfeed
An entire section of Kentucky Sen. Rand Pauls 2013 book Government Bullies was copied wholesale from a 2003 case study by the Heritage Foundation, BuzzFeed has learned. The copied section, 1,318 words, is by far the most significant instance reported so far of Paul borrowing language from other published material.
The new cut-and-paste job follows reports by BuzzFeed, Politico, and MSNBC that Paul had plagiarized speeches either from Wikipedia or news reports. The book was published in August 2013 by Center Street, a division of Hachette Book Group.
In this case, Paul included a link to the Heritage case study in the books footnotes, though he made no effort to indicate that not just the source, but the words themselves, had been taken from Heritage.

Not a chance Paul is held accountable for this, it just will be chalked up as partisan lies.

(59,585 posts)"Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of the
Internet and to promote and support its development.
No one person or even small group of persons exclusively "invented" the
Internet. It is the result of many years of ongoing collaboration among
people in government and the university community. But as the two people
who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the
Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a
Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to
our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of
time."

The internet benefits millions of people. The right needed a way to undermine the role of the government (specifically Al Gore) in the development of technology that benefits millions of people and created millions of jobs.

(32,723 posts)They let corporate lawyers do all of that and put their name on it after their lawyers look at it.
Then they take credit for it.
It's all ghost written.
These people are cast as spokesmodels. It's been that way since Reagan on the Republican side. The Democrats who are ACTUAL workhorses are hammering out details clause by clause. Republicans have to take everything to a lawyer for review because it's WAY over their head. I guarantee you that Paul Ryan didn't actually write the budget that is his claim to fame. He's a con artist. That's what it takes to be a Star. Kinda funny how someone is booked solid on all of the Sunday Talk and the appears EVERYWHERE after that on morning shows and yet in the middle of that schedule they manage to pump out a 91 page budget complete with charts and graphs including this absolute NONSENSE graph:
Because everyone knows current trends are fixed in stone for the next 70 years.
Meanwhile, the Paul Ryan Plan zeros the debt in 30 years.
Cosmocat
(14,564 posts)Agree totally on Ryan.
He has the bookish good looks, that is why he was chosen to be the pitch man for it.
But, he is a empty suit. Not a chance he came up with it.

(37,324 posts)they would have to run smart people for office. Smart people are harder to control. During the shutdown CNBC had a teabagger congresscritter on every day. And no mater what they were asked, they gave the same answer.
They are taught a few talking points, shown a few cheapshots and think they are ready to govern.

(19,926 posts)I hope this brings him down. Unfortunately his fans won't care, they don't read books.
I can't believe the way he tried to make the accusation about something it was not. He word saladed it to try to get people to think that the complaint was that he didn't give credit to the movie's screenwriters when he recounted a story from a movie. Not at all what happened or what was complained about. Weasel.
Glad Buzzfeed is continuing on this. Hope Maddow stays on it too.

For them it is the equivalency of theft or quackery, but it is in their profession and they take it very personally, while a lot of other things that are more serious are forgiven. The media will make it into something, its one of the few things they actually do.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/barackobama/2607505/Joe-Biden-plagiarised-Neil-Kinnock-speech.html
The difference is, of course, that Biden simply took the hook from Kinnock's speech and reworked it to apply to himself, whereas Paul is a serial plagiarizer.
Though I do agree that Reublicans are more likely to be given a pass on this, and other things, by the so-called "liberal" media.

(90,677 posts)That is, if he's capable of embarrasment, or if any of his followers care.
The reason that Doris Kearns Goodwin suffered as much as she did over an unattributed passage (which iirc she blamed on an errant 3X5 card) is that she is a serious historian/commenter and has standards -- as do her peers. She really paid for that lapse.
Rand is or may be operating in a post-academic-standards universe in which Wikipedia is an extension of your brain and doesn't have to be cited. Or something. There certainly seems to be some combination of ignorance, arrogance, and entitlement at work.
We'll see how this plays out.

If Ayn Rand's entire body of work could be summarized in a single sentence it would be this: One, long, often poorly-written and two-dimensional primal scream against anyone ever expropriating someone else's labor for any reason whatsoever.
