Cruz: Father’s remark about sending Obama ‘back to Kenya’ was joke

ADDISON — Ted Cruz said Friday that his father was making an “ill-advised joke” when he told an audience in 2012 that President Barack Obama should be sent back to Kenya and Indonesia.

“He made a joke,” the junior senator from Texas said after speaking to the Greater Dallas Indo-American Chamber of Commerce in Addison. “It was an ill-advised joke. Sadly, those who are trying to play the politics of personal destruction are trying to smear him and use that to attack me.”

Rafael Cruz, a Dallas-area pastor, made the remarks while stumping for his son’s Senate campaign in September 2012.

“We have our work cut out for us. We need to send Barack Obama back to Chicago,” the elder Cruz told a North Texas tea party gathering. “I’d like to send him back to Kenya, back to Indonesia.”
