Profiles in courage, The AccoLade

Deep in the heart of one of the most unfriendly nations towards women is the AccoLade. This Saudi Arabian all girl alternative rock band risks punishments we can't imagine to play their music. Several years ago, I first heard of them, and downloaded their first song Pinocchio. Every now and then, I go and search to see if they have done anything new, or if they are still around, or worse, have been identified by the Religious Police and beaten mercilessly for daring to challenge the role of a woman in a nation that tolerates no such challenges.

It is one thing, and certainly requires courage to chase your dreams as a woman. It is another thing entirely when the fact you have dreams at all is punishable by the society you are in. It requires a courage I can not imagine to risk punishment of an unimaginable sort by following those dreams.

So I wanted to invite you to listen to the AccoLade, and perhaps let those young women know that we wish them the best, and that with a little luck, the next generation won't have to hide in a basement while they explore their artistic souls.

The first song from these courageous women.
