Alicia Ann Lynch, a 22-year-old from Michigan, tweeted and instagrammed a photo of herself at work dressed as a Boston Marathon bombing victim for Halloween.
Twitter users were enraged at the costume, and thousands tweeted at Lynch to express their disgust.
...
The Internet rage spun out of control as Twitter users took out their anger at Lynch by contacting her family. They also circulated nude pictures and videos of her found on Tumblr.
Lynch deleted all of her social media accounts, then later reopened her Twitter to attempt to be forgiven for her costume.

(24,096 posts)wtf is wrong with people?
Where are her friends, parents to let this moron know she's an asshole?

(25,699 posts)...Well, I guess they're probably assholes all the time, but they put it on display on Halloween

(115,683 posts)"I have a great idea for an interesting, edgy Halloween costume!"?? It was also really wrong and stupid for people to use Twitter, etc. to threaten her (and her parents!). Still, wadda maroon.

This is a lesson on why one should never post anything personal online.

(14,881 posts)unless she is lying, which is entirely possible seeing as she's now had nude video and pix of herself circulated:
"I have been fired from my job. I am paying for what I thought was a simple joke. I know it was wrong now. I wasn't thinking."
part of making fun of people who were killed or seriously injured is a joke? Is that what passes as humor today.
As to her claim that her parents did nothing wrong, we'll I'd say the photo is proof of where they went wrong. How they managed to produce such a nasty piece of work is beyond me

(14,195 posts)No.
It was a stupid costume, tone deaf, and totally unacceptable. But to lose your job over a stupid insensitive costume? To have people dredge up old nude photos (also a pretty poor decision..) and contact your parents? The internet morality 'police' were WAY over the top here.

(14,195 posts)dumb, but really, to have people so vindictive as to dig out past stupid acts (nude photos) and post them, and to contact her folks??? Plus, being fired?
I think the internet 'morality' squad went way the f overboard here

(14,881 posts)She lost her job for making her company look bad by attention-seeking the work-party photo on twitter with her identification.
People have been advised time and again all over the place not to be careful about how they use social media because if companies think you are showing them in a bad light, they may well fire you.
She didn't just post an insensitive, tasteless photo of herself. She identified herself and the photo she posted was from a work party.
You and I may think it is wrong to harass somebody for posting something offensive on twitter, but the fact is that if you post something offensive on twitter (or facebook or wherever) then you may well be harassed and depending on what and how you posted it, you may end up losing your job.

(14,881 posts)so it was dumb of her, but she'll think twice the next time she's posting on twitter.
Somebody was also just fired for posting pix of her teenage/early 20s sons dressed up as Zimmerman and Trayvon for Halloween. They weren't at her place of work, but her place of work was either tracked down or mentioned on her facebook site or whatever. And then the workplace was contacted by multiple viewers and they decided she had to go.
Unless somebody is the "face of the company" they should be left alone, but the fact is that if you participate in places where you can be identified, you are putting yourself at risk. Companies generally don't think twice about firing these days. We're all ultimately replaceable.
You and I may never consider tracking somebody's workplace and getting them fired for offensive crap, but a lot of people will. Especially if they don't sense any potential blowback to themselves.

(27,630 posts)How insensitive is that?! Did any of them lose their jobs? I don't think so, because it happened before the internet became popular.

(5,141 posts)I don't understand how she could say in effect, 'sorry I offended anyone, but I wore the costume to work where i knew everyone and I knew no one would be offended by it'. By then your sorry ass posted it online
what don't you get?
That said, I don't understand the need of today's youngins (HEY YOU KIDS, GET OFF MY LAWN!!) to email/post and otherwise publish nude pictures of themselves. Its going to eventually kick you in your scantily clad ass, be it by your future spouse's parents, and potential employer or a virtual angry mob.
