(1,301 posts)In this poll they're comparing your responses to the actual Libertarian Party, not the Republican opportunists!
I know I'm gonna get a reputation for this on here, but I'll continue to defend real Libertarians as well-meaning and intellectually consistent--and right on a lot of issues, even if they're wrong on others. I would be very happy if they completely took over the fascist Republican Party, but that's probably too much to hope for--especially since the one semi-real libertarian they've got, Rand Paul, has already made concessions to the evangelical right that would make any honest Libertarian puke.

(16,410 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Very thorough, with thoughtful answer choices provided and a chance to write in your own.
I forgot to copy my results before closing the window, but suffice it to say that I'm with the Democrats a vast majority of the time, with a heavy dose of Green, a small-to-moderate dose of both (civil) Libertarianism and Socialism, and only 3% (I remembered that number!
) agreement with reTHUGs.
I'll have to do it again to get the rest of the actual numbers. One of the best political quizzes ever!
On Edit: Took it again and the results are...
Democrats 81% - on economic, foreign policy, social, environmental, & science issues.
Greens 70% - on social, environmental, & science issues.
Socialists 51% - on social, environmental, & science issues.
Libertarians 16% - on reproductive choice & cannabis.
Republicans 3% - on no major issues.
A most excellent quiz!

Should the federal government fund stem cell research?
Republicans: No
Your similar answer: Yes, as long as they are non-fetal stem cells
Should we expand our offshore oil drilling?
Republicans: Yes
Your similar answer: Incentivize the private sector to develop alternative forms of energy
How did they decide that my answers mean I support the Republican stance, when my opinions aren't even close to theirs?

Still I question the validity of any test that would rate me as 30% Libertarian on the basis of my foreign policy choices. I loathe Ron Paul as much as I loathe everything that he believes in. Just because I believe that our tax dollars would be better spent in helping the people in need within our own country does not make me a Libertarian. I makes me a socialist.

(13,980 posts)It isn't a percent of you (or the percentages would add up to 100).
It is the percentage of issues that you happen to agree on, although it might be for different philosophical reasons. (You want to get out of Afganistan, they want to get out of Afghanistan. You want to legalize pot, they want to leagalize pot, etc.).
You are right that it doesn't make you a libertarian. It just means that in the Venn diagram of positions, the libertarian and socialist circles have some overlap.

Edit: I just wanted to point out how strange it was reading through the issues on which I agree/disagree with Libertarians. When it comes to foreign policy they're very anti-intervention which I completely agree with. When it comes to domestic policy everything is deregulate this and privatize that and all this "free market" nonsense. It's just crazy to me how Libertarians can be so good on certain issues like military intervention and NSA spying but so batshit crazy on issues like healthcare and the economy.

(36,063 posts)This is about ideas expressly shared with candidates...
These scoring is on positions that the candidates thinks will work with voters on the left.
We ought not to forget that democratic candidates represent a much more heterogenous collection of politicians with a broader range of campaign positions since many represent socially and economically conservative districts.
This big party 'regression to the mean' pulls the Dems 'positions' on the issues somewhat rightward.
I am not too concerned about myself or many progressive dems finding out this quiz classifies them as subconscious greens.

(16,191 posts)My "libertarian" economic views draw heavily on my anarcho-libertarian background. Remember the Seattle anti-WTO protests in the 90's? My economic viewpoints were largely formed in the middle of that, and haven't changed much.
Strong opposition to economic neoliberalism, strong support of anti-capitalist movements, strong anti-globalization roots...that pretty much describes my fundamental economic viewpoints. It's basic libertarian socialism, as described by Chomsky.
A lot of people who dislike the word "libertarian" call it other names, like "anti-authoritarian socialism" or "stateless socialism". It's simply a recognition that government can be usurped by the powerful, and that the only safe way to keep power in the hands of the people...is to keep the power in the hands of the people.

In regards to Immigration, I do not actually side with any party. I had to place my position.
My position has always been to simplify the immigration process particularly for those who have tried to immigrate here legally. There are many who can not return to their families even when they work here, since if they do, they would not be able to come back.
I feel like they have been getting the short end of the stick and a lack of visibility for their issues.
