PAC spending in New Jersey skyrockets in 2013

There’s no need to wait until the elections Tuesday to find out who the losers are in New Jersey: It’s ordinary voters whose influence is being overwhelmed by special-interest groups pouring money into campaigns at a record-shattering pace, good government advocates say.

The independent groups — which have no spending limits and can shield well-heeled contributors from disclosure laws — have shelled out nearly $38 million on this year’s elections. Officials from the state Election Law Enforcement Commission said the final tally after next week should nearly triple the 2009 category record of $14.9 million.

Jeff Brindle, executive director of ELEC, said the total amount of independent spending is “mind-boggling.”

“It’s a whole new world in New Jersey politics,” Brindle said.

N.J. 2013 election biggest-spending special interest groups
Garden State Forward (NJEA) $11,925,758
Committee for Our Children’s Future $7,800,000
Fund for Jobs, Growth and Security $7,631,709
One New Jersey $2,800,000
Republican Governors Association $1,725,000

But maybe the ads on some of the cable channels are cheaper. Verizon seems to be good at cutting in very local advertising, e.g. ads for individual car dealers that you would never see on the broadcast stations in NYC.
