Fox News guest: ‘Obamacare is a war on bros’ because rates are same as women

Forbes blogger Avik Roy claimed on Tuesday that President Barack Obama’s health care reform law was a “war on bros” because men and women will now have to pay the same rates for insurance.

Roy, who also works for the Manhattan Institute, told Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy that he had determined that several states’ average premiums could increase over 130 percent under the Affordable Care Act.

“And that’s an average,” he explained. “So, the key thing to understand is Obamacare is a war on bros. It’s young men in particular who are going to pay a lot more. Young people are going to pay more, men are going to pay more relative to women and healthy people are going to pay more relative to sick people.”

According to The Washington Post, insurance companies sometimes charged women up to ten times more than men before the Affordable Care Act made discrimination illegal.

Bring in five shirts and say "These are men's shirts" and you pay x price for each shirt.

Bring in five shirts and say "These are women's shirts" and you pay x+y price for each shirt.

It's called "gender pricing" and it happens a LOT.

See this article, for starters:

Go ahead and raise insurance premiums for women.

But then yo also have to double the tax rate on men because THEY are the ones we have to have such a huge criminal justice system for: LEOs, jails, courts, judges, defense attorneys, law schools, federal and state prisons, probation officers, etc etc etc.

war on bros
war on Christmas
war on Christians
war on Christian values
war against gun rights
war against loss of freedom because of healthcare.gov
war against the rich
war against white people

but these wars are true

a real war on women that they don't talk about
a real war on the LGBT that they don't talk about
a real war on civil rights that they don't talk about
a real war in Afghanistan that they rarely talk about
a real war on the poor that they don't talk about
a real war against education that they don't talk about

and probably 10 more that we don't know about

Much as adults without children are forced to pay for the education of the children of other families?

I imagine many sub-literate, under-educated people think that is indeed, a problem. They are of course, incorrect, but what the hell... everyone needs to blame other people for something every now and then.

If a young man decides he's never going to have children, then he is being forced to buy a product he will never use. It's sort of like getting car insurance when you dont own a car.

Taxes are different. Even though the man in question will never use the roads, he still has to pay taxes to build/repair the roads.

The ACA was not designed to be a tax. It is insurance.

And I guess this presumes the young man was hatched out of an egg as opposed to being born from a woman who had medical needs at the time.

30. In general, women have higher healthcare costs
Tue Nov 5, 2013, 04:20 PM
Nov 2013

There is no conspiracy by the patriarchy to punish women with higher premiums. When you look at the raw numbers, women generally cost more money to the healthcare industry. This is partly due to women using services more often than men and partly due to nature.

Women go to the doctor far more often then men. Women use diagnostic services far more often than men. Women live longer than men. Women get pregnant and men cannot. These things add up over a woman's life compared to a man. So now you have a law where women are guaranteed equal premiums, but get more benefits and use the system more.

Meanwhile men are still being charged more than women in practically every other form of insurance.

Can't you understand why some men may see this as unfair?

don't get priced out of insurance and care.

You oppose community rating and guaranteed issue. In essence, you're more Ted Cruz than Bernie Sanders on the ACA.

34. But I will never get pregnant
Tue Nov 5, 2013, 05:02 PM
Nov 2013

So Im paying for something I can never use. Like I said before, it's like the government telling me to buy car insurance even if I don't have a car. So I'm paying a premium for a policy that will never have a claim made on it.

Now I understand you are making the "community" argument. That we still have to pay taxes for schools even if we have no kids. That in the end, society as a whole will benefit. Etc, etc.. The problem with that argument is that the ACA is not a single-payer system. It's still an insurance policy we have to buy.

And that argument still doesn't address the fact how women get more guaranteed benefits. Cancer screenings, STD screenings, contraception, free check-ups, more domestic violence resources, etc.. Men have to be approved for a lot of these same services.

Cute trick on working in contraception and domestic violence resources as other "gifts" that women get through the ACA.

No maternity problems--we all pay the same rate, everything's copasetic!

I've got news for you "bros" who have a problem sharing the cost of women's maternity coverage--you made them pregnant.

Now, if young women could just figure out a way to stop paying for young men's injuries from bar fights and gun play.

of the mother and requires medical care. And the condition is connected to a specific genetic pattern, the XX chromosome -- and under the ABA, insurance companies can no longer discriminate against people based on conditions related to their chromosomes.

No one will pay more for any preexisting condition, including genetic-related conditions, of any kind. You won't pay more because you have the genes for diabetes, or Huntington's disease, or prostate cancer or anything else.

You won't have to pay more because you have a high risk of needing medical care because of errant cells growing in your colon; or to protect your health while foreign cells grow in your uterus.

Bottom line: you can't be charged more because of any medical condition you already have, or because of conditions specific to your chromosomes, even if yours are XX.

Evil women, forcing men to share the cost of pregnancies they help create and of infants who have an equal chance of being male or female.
