RUSH Fiasco "Sending Chill Up The Spine Of Radio Advertisers & Programmers"

............the Rush fiasco is sending a chill up the spine of radio advertisers and programmers. Yes, yes, they do have spines.

Talkers magazine – the bible of the talk radio industry — says that they’re hearing from advertising reps that ” major advertisers are issuing yet another round of ‘no controversial programming’ dictates.” That could be HUGE — especially for political talk radio, which is largely a conservative turf.

Said Talkers:

The Rush fiasco “is likely only to add fuel to a fire that’s been simmering for the past 20 years. While no laws were broken by Rush Limbaugh, advertisers who fear backlash from activists, parent’s organizations and other groups – even though talk hosts with loyal followings that are likely to buy their products or services help sell those products or services very successfully – don’t want to risk bad PR, protester harassment or outright boycotts from being associated with a “controversial” talk media figure. They reason that there may be many more customers of theirs whom they don’t want to alienate who don’t listen to “controversial” talk radio, so they shy away from the genre altogether. The bigger challenge facing talk radio right now is not defending its programming, but selling it in this turbulent climate.

something like this: "Here on NPR we don't have shock jocks. We just provide facts and news coverage."

Had to read this to a friend, and her response, "Hell yes. Dude, go back to playing music. No one wants to hear, I hate, hate, hate all the time. Play some Muddy Waters or something."

hate radio. If only this edict will be followed by rockets up the asses of all who broadcast, purvey, or sponsor venemous hate, how sweet it would be.

This time it's going to be different.

I like, though, how the advertisers jump to precisely the wrong conclusion: "No controversial programming." No, it's not "controversial" in the sense that there's some animated discussion. That vile human being has conducted a week-long jihad against American women for no other reason than his own misogyny. I'm fine with controversy. I'm not so fine with relentless, mindless bigotry and chauvinism, and here's a surprise for you advertisers, neither are about 90% of people. You want to advertise to a lizard-brained 10% of the population that would need to be dragged kicking and screaming into a 17th Century mentality? Be my guest, and advertise all you want on that vile human being's daily show. But if your business plan is intended to sell a product to the other 90% of the population, you might want to reconsider your ad-buying decisions.

too bad right wingers can't come to terms with that fact. Their bigotry is NOT just a point of view.... it's bigotry and their efforts to normalize their "point of views" has been their way of spreading their bigotry over the airwaves and on tv (Fox News).

When it was in effect, they could somewhat disclaim what they aired when they aired political material because they had to give "equal time". Now it's their decision and they're regretting being responsible for it.
