Illinois lawmakers approve same-sex marriage in key vote



The Illinois House of Representatives approved a bill on Tuesday to allow gays and lesbians to marry in the Land of Lincoln, capping a months-long wait for a vote on the legislation while same-sex marriage advocates worked on getting the support needed to pass the measure.

The House voted 61-54 on the legislation. But before the bill could become law, it had to return to the Senate for another ballot since the House added an amendment to make June 1 the effective date of the legislation — rather than 30 days after Gov. Pat Quinn signs it. The Senate quickly approved the bill after the House vote.

“Today, the Illinois House put our state on the right side of history,” said Quinn, who has long vowed to sign the legislation.
After the vote, the White House tweeted: "RT if you agree that every American should have the freedom to marry who they love."

1. All it's taken is watching the first states

and noticing that the divorce rate didn't skyrocket and all the kiddies get abandoned. Also, the sky failed to fall and same sex couples got married without lightning striking the officiant.

There is nothing like proving right wing religious horseshit to be exactly that in a few places to get the right thing accepted by the many.
