Statewide AMBER Alert cancelled, child recovered

A statewide Amber alert has been issued for a man suspected of abducting his infant son from Sunnyvale California. His vehicle has been sighted in San Diego and his cell phone has also been traced to here. The suspect, 22-year-old Mesut Guler, was last seen driving a tan 2004 GMC Envoy with license place 6HL892. It has a large American eagle on the rear window.

The suspect is a Turkish man, six feet tall, weighing 120 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. The two-week old infant, Henry Guler-Romero, is described as Hispanic with black hair and brown eyes.

A 22-year-old Sunnyvale was arrested at a checkpoint in Mexico Wednesday afternoon, and his two-week-old son was recovered unharmed, less than 24 hours after a statewide Amber Alert was issued.

The manhunt for Mesuit Guler officially began at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Sunnyvale Dept. of Safety Capt. Dave Pitts, who held a news conference on Wednesday morning.

"He told the mother he was going to run errands," Pitts said. "And then he left with the child, sending her a text that he would cause harm to himself and the child if police were involved."

17. Baby Kidnapped, Amber Alert Issued

A child abduction is said to have occurred at 4:14 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 in Sunnyvale, according to CHP authorities who issued an Amber Alert Wednesday morning.

The 1-month-old child's name is Henry Guler-Romero and he's believed to have been kidnapped from his residence in the 900 block of Helen Avenue in Sunnyvale, according to the alert.

His alleged abductor is identified as a Turkish male, Mesut Guler, 22, with brown hair, brown eyes, standing 6-foot, weighing 120 pounds, possibly driving a 2004 tan GMC Envoy with license plate number 6HIL892, with a large American eagle on its rear window, the alert said.

The baby's ethnicity is described as Hispanic with brown eyes and black hair.

The incident was reported to police at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Capt. Dave Pitts said the abduction appears to have stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Guler and his girlfriend over his desire to move out of state.

"She did not want to, and then that led to him taking the child," Pitts said. He said Guler had wanted to move "back to New York."

The baby's mother said Guler has friends in Mexico and might be headed in that direction, according to Pitts.

"We did have some pings on his phone down in the San Diego area early this morning," Pitts said.

He said, however, that authorities don't think Guler has left the country.

"We don't believe he's crossed the border ... We don't have any reason to believe that at this time," Pitts said.

Guler has previously threatened to harm himself and the baby, police said.

Police are working with the FBI and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office on the investigation, he said.

The public is asked to report sightings to the Sunnyvale Police Department at 408-730-7110, or call 911.

AMBER ALERT UPDATE: An infant boy reported missing has been found safe and his father arrested by Mexican authorities near the border in Arizona, police say.

The father, a 22-year-old Sunnyvale, Calif., resident, was stopped at a checkpoint in Arizona near Mexico when authorities discovered the warrant for his arrest, according to the Sunnyvale Police Department.

Mesut Guler was arrested and his two-week-old son was found unharmed, police said.

Father was questioned in northern Mexico, about 100 miles from San Ysidro.

The one month old is safe and sound.
