(31,228 posts)his opponent, but the AG race is so tight? I kept hoping that No. Va. would make it a clean sweep.

(31,228 posts)shouldn't be surprised that he was defeated so handily. That being said, I take it the Repuke AG candidate is not a teabagger? Otherwise, I still don't understand why the good folks in N. Va didn't pull him over the line.

(53,339 posts)Voters who used provisional ballots have until noon Friday to submit ID in order to have their votes counted.
The state Board of Elections currently has Herring up by 32, but watch for new updates:

Dave Wasserman of Cook Political Report has been keeping on top of changes as canvass errors are adjusted and absentee and provisional ballots are counted:

(12,041 posts)I was wondering what the deal was with provisional ballots, hopefully people are able to get them counted. 32 votes is a margin that is so small that it is basically a tie that could go either way once the recount happens. Let's hope the recount is done fairly and there is a great deal of transparency.

(12,041 posts)With the way the GOP has been trying to purge Democratic voters I suspect provisional ballots would go very heavily for Herring.

(11,785 posts)I wonder how many voters were struck from the rolls there, and how many provisional ballots were cast.

(609 posts)Blue Virginia is reporting in comments to a post that the 32-vote margin for Herring may be due to a clerical error in Prince William County.
No further updates in the past hour or so.
Mark Herring is my current state senator -- he is a great person, lawyer and statesman. We need him in the AG spot.
Hoping...

(53,339 posts)The state Board of Elections won't certify the results until Nov. 25, and then we can expect a recount to follow at the request of the second-place finisher.
Let's hope it goes to Herring when it's over.

(609 posts)I'm hoping the provisional ballots make a difference.
Ranchemp.
(1,991 posts)Obenshain is back in the lead by 726 votes.
Damn.

(609 posts)We worked so hard to educate people about the stark differences between these two candidates. Frustrating beyond belief.
However, I'm still going to hold out hope that this will turn in our favor.

(10,942 posts)up, or worse yet, voted for the Libertarian because he was mouthing shit that he had no intention of upholding if he somehow got elected. Virginia folks that didn't vote, you may get an AG who is going to try to gum up government work in your state. How do you like that?

(42,675 posts)There was none, so Obenshain's showing against Herring had nothing to do with a Libertarian taking votes from Herring. Moreover, it appears that more Democrats voted in the VA election than repubs, and "independents" made up the largest voting bloc. Keep in mind that there is no party identification so this is based on self-identification in exit polls -- not necessarily the most accurate way of counting such things.
Everyone who was paying the slightest bit of attention here in Virginia knew that Obenshain/Herring would be close. There was little in the way of advertising related to Obenshain until the last couple of weeks and the Herring ads were mostly negative while Obenshain ran a mix of ads. Plus the Obenshain name is one that is well known in Virginia -- his father Richard Obenshain was a major figure in the repub party in Virginia until his death in a plane crash while campaigning for the US Senate. Herring faced a major gap in name recognition.
Finally, it may come as a surprise to some, but Obenshain outpolled McAuliffe in two of the bluest counties in Virginia -- Arlington and Fairfax. It wasn't that Democrats didn't come out for him, it was that non-Democrats didn't go his way in other parts of the state.

(11,785 posts)...VA SBE reporting McAuliffe won London Towne #1 (Centreville) 732-413, Northam won 789-412, but Obenshain won 775-773. Really? (2/2)

(11,785 posts)In Hollin Hall, it's much more likely Obenshain got 528 votes than 258. That would give him an extra 270 votes, so that one's in his favor.

Another HUGE Fairfax Co. error benefiting Herring (D): correct total is Herring 877-614, but VA SBE lists it as Obenshain 614-577. +300 H

(36,974 posts)... they had found a 600 vote error in favor of Herring, then another big error, then a little error, etc and it kept going back and forth between Herring and Obenshain - I finally gave up and went to bed.
I am surprised they are still finding so many errors today!

(53,339 posts)His info is coming from county election boards and other sources.
Media orgs like AP also get updated results directly from SBE before SBE posts it to its own site. So the SBE site tends to run behind, but it's the most authoritative source on the count. Wasserman is looking ahead to where the SBE count likely will be when the additional count changes are figured in.

(53,339 posts)What's addictive is that it's such a nailbiter with the count status so fluid. On top of that is the differing numbers from different sources, so you have to play detective a bit to pin down what's really happening and put the information in perspective.
We know it will be drawn out, with the provisional deadline Friday, the SBE validation meeting the 25th, and the recount to follow. But what a ride!
