So spare me the honor and glory bullshit coming from the military. That they ignore the needs of veterans as they do while at the same time bleed the country dry says how much honor they really have.

(273 posts)My dad read an article a few years ago about the whisper campaign about maybe needing a draft again because nobody was signing up to go to Iraq/Afghanistan.
He did 20 years USAF, and my brother was in Iraq twice.
My dad went off and sent LTTEs all over the place, and to the SecDef saying you only want to draft because you won't pay for the risk. If the men/women in the military were paid 6 figures to put their life on the line, we'd be a lot more careful about who got sent.
My brother signed up after 9/11, and did two tours in Iraq. They tried to charge him for his gear that was damaged by the recklessness of others. Then he came home, had a hard time dealing with the mortgage that his wife got tricked into. The Army talks about all the stuff you'll learn. They never say that's only during peace time. So he got no marketable skills, and a crappy mortgage while he was thousands of miles from home.
He tried to do milk delivery and that ended up being WAY too much like convoy protection runs. Big boxy, hard to maneuver vehicle, driving in the dark. Every car on the side of the road looked like the IEDs he got hit by in Iraq. So he had to stop that job too.
So now he's using food stamps and his GI Bill to try and get some skills that don't involve kicking in doors, rousting people, and shooting anything that moves.
Yet somehow, he's a mooch.
Some dirtbag Republican "representative" that hates government will get a pension and healthcare forever.

(5,029 posts)The Bonus Army was the popular name of an assemblage of some 43,000 marchers17,000 World War I veterans, their families, and affiliated groupswho gathered in Washington, D.C., in the spring and summer of 1932 to demand cash-payment redemption of their service certificates. Its organizers called it the Bonus Expeditionary Force to echo the name of World War I's American Expeditionary Force, while the media called it the Bonus March. It was led by Walter W. Waters, a former Army sergeant.

Todays Washington DC elite might want to be a little more concerned about modern day Vets, we are a little better trained than those from the days of old.
Non sibi sed patriae is a Latin phrase meaning "Not for self, but for country". The phrase is inscribed over the chapel doors at the United States Naval Academy and some war memorials.

(10,893 posts)If people in general didn't need food stamps, things would be good. I'm being Mr. Obvious here, but our elected leaders are going to have to do a better job creating jobs (especially those with livable wages) so that people won't have to rely so much on food stamps and other government aid programs. In 2011, they should've passed Obama's Jobs Plan in Congress, but they didn't. We are not reaching our full potential in regards to job growth. Unfortunately, many Congressmen/women from a certain party seem to believe that people want to be poor and rely on things like food stamps and SSI, but it's not like that at all. Who wants to live on less than $2 per meal or one check per month that's less than a thousand dollars? I know I wouldn't.
