Jason Carter to challenge Deal for GA Governor

http://www.ajc.com/news/news/jason-carter-to-challenge-gov-deal-next-year/nbkQ8/

"Democratic state Sen. Jason Carter will challenge Gov. Nathan Deal next year in a move that catapults the gubernatorial contest into the national spotlight and tests whether Georgia’s changing demographics can loosen the Republican Party’s 12-year grip on the state’s highest office."

snip

“We want a Georgia that’s at its best,” Carter said. “And Georgia at its best invests in education, it doesn’t cut billions out of the classrooms, it has an economy that works for the middle class and it always has an honest government.”

Georgia's changing demographics may may make next year's election very interesting with Carter taking on Deal and Michelle Nunn running to replace Saxby.

"The white proportion of voters shrunk 9 points to 66 percent from 2002 to 2010, and the dive was even more pronounced during presidential election years. About 44 percent of Georgia residents are now minorities — up 7 points in the past decade — and nonwhites could outnumber whites here by 2020."

edit to add: Jason Carter is the grandson of Jimmy Carter and Michelle Nunn is the daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn.

... but he'll be in position to run and win in an open election five years from now.

I think he has a chance next year if the voting machines don't control the outcome. Georgia IS changing. Between the growth in non-white population and the republicans pissing on women, combined with our liberal urban areas, a big change is possible.

7. Cathy Cox is a Democrat, but she made a mistake when she hired Diebold for us.

I don't trust those machines as far as I can throw them. I say so too, nearly every time I go to vote. I have every reason to believe that Purdue was not elected in 2002 but, rather, was "selected" by Diebold. "Rob Georgia," indeed.

That said, I fully agree that Georgia is changing, but I must add that Georgia has always been moderate. It's even in our state motto: "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation."

Few people realize that the Georgia colony was designed by James Edward Oglethorpe to be a utopian society. Slavery was illegal in the original Georgia colony. We only changed our minds on that subject when our wealthy landowners looked at South Carolina and North Carolina and saw that they could make a lot more money with their land in rice plantations in our marshes with abundant slave labor (a perk enjoyed by the wealthy in those states but forbidden to Georgians). I should add that Georgia was quite resistant to joining the Confederacy. Alexander Stevens, a Georgian, became the Vice-President of the Confederacy only because he was the most outspoken and powerful opponent of secession, and the secessionists recruited him just to give a voice in the government to those who opposed secession.

Georgia is different from its neighbors in a host of ways, and those of us who grew up in Georgia's proud liberal tradition remain proud of the 39th President of the United States, and I look forward to his grandson continuing this proud tradition.

We are forward-thinking and politically moderate. Just look at Atlanta!

8. A lot of people dissing GA don't know the state at all.

One thing that fascinates and frustrates me at the same time, are the number of rural Georgians that I know personally who call themselves democrats but vote for Rs in state wide and national elections. I know that they supported President Carter and Sam Nunn, so I have high hopes for their offsprings.

9. Racism drives the politics of the state, and that should come as no surprise.

That said, attitudes about race are changing rapidly, and I think this is true for the entire country, not just Georgia. The younger generations aren't swayed by it. As the old, entrenched racists die out, progress will come to Georgia as it will to the rest of the nation. It won't take long from what I can tell.

I am reminded of a ubiquitous joke in the UK.

American beer is like making love in a canoe. It's f***ing close to water.

12. Indeed. We have gotten a lot better about our beer in the last 10 yrs. or so.

There are a number of American micro-brews I like. In fact, some of the major brands have added beers with some color and flavor over the past several years.

That said, regarding the biggest and best-selling American beers, I think the joke from the UK is spot-on.

Nathan Deal has some serious ethical problems right now but he's been able so far to dodge much intense scrutiny or public pressure to come clean. At the very least, he will have to answer to Georgians on these. Also, he will have to explain why he has turned down desperately needed federal Medicaid funds while many of our hospitals are barely making it and on the verge of closing, and while a large segment of our population has no health care. And, no one will be surprised to hear that he has tried to block implementation of the Affordable Care Act and refused to set up a state exchange which would have created healthy competition and more choices. And I could go on and on. Go Jason!

14. True...we could write a book on Deal's ethical problems.

But you have singled out my main complaint too. Not expanding Medicaid and doing everything possible to block ACA is inhumane.

This is good news for GA - he'll push the republicans hard.

He will also get painted by a lot of leftover hate that the 'pukes still harbor for his granddad. Jason knows this and will be prepared to handle.

Many people don't remember what a tireless and effective campaigner Rosalynn can be. The haters will continue to hate, but there is still a lot of Carter love here.

I am pumped! I so want Deal to get his ass handed to him.

Deal hates the poor of this state and wont do a damned thing to help.

Hopefully, the ethics issues are boiling for deal by the time we move into campaign season next year.

So glad to see some young blood aiming to lead this state.
