Kansas school suspends 13-year-old boy for wearing Vera Bradley purse

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/11/07/kansas-school-suspends-13-year-old-boy-for-wearing-vera-bradley-purse/

A 13-year-old boy in Kansas was suspended on Wednesday for wearing a Vera Bradley purse — and officials say he can’t come back until he takes it off.

Skylar Davis told KCTV that he had been carrying the colorful Vera Bradley handbag for months until one official at Anderson County Senior-Junior School insisted that he remove it on Wednesday.

“I was a little furious, and I called the school [and spoke to Hillard] to reverify the story, and yeah, he refused to take off his Vera Bradley bag, nothing more to do it,” Willis recalled to KCTV. “Skylar has been going to school since August with that same Vera Bradley bag on, hasn’t taken it off. What is the problem?”

Willis added that there was no rule about purses in the school handbook.

Davis pointed out that girls at the school never faced punishment for wearing their purses.

Update (4:30 p.m. ET): Superintendent Don Blome told Raw Story that middle school students were forbidden from bringing their bags to class. He said the policy was applied fairly to male and female students.

I was disappointed with the over all size of this bag. I like to carry a small plastic container with my salad and such. This bag isn't very wide or deep. Yes, I know the measurements are listed, back it's going. It is very stylish and if you don't want to carry much I'm sure it would be fine. Still looking-

Backpack, fanny pack, purse, what the fuck ever. Don Blome needs a new job, he seems unqualified to do his current one.

In the middle school my daughter goes to, nobody can carry anything at all other than books for the current class and a binder they are expected to have with them at all times. No purses. The idea is that kids could be dealing drugs or carrying something else they shouldn't have.

But that's hard for middle school aged girls, the majority of whom are menstruating and need to carry menstrual supplies. So some schools allow purses.

But obviously this gives girls the ability to carry stuff and it doesn't allow boys the ability to carry stuff.

I personally think they should allow all kids to carry a small bag with their stuff. It's a bit over the top to not allow kids to carry anything.
