Study shows a single dose of HPV may be enough for lasting immunity.

This of course needs to be confirmed in other research. But I think studies comparing different dose schedules should have been done BEFORE releasing the vaccine, not after. Why did they assume a 3 dose schedule was necessary? Was there more of a profit in a three dose schedule?

Note: the article mentions that the immunity lasted for four years, which was the length of the study. The 3 dose schedule had also shown immunity for that same period of time when it was released.

A single dose - rather than the recommended three - of a vaccine against the sexually transmitted disease HPV may be enough to ward off cervical cancer, researchers said Monday.

The findings may lead to simpler delivery and lower costs, possibly increasing the number of young people who get vaccinated, said the report in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.

The HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and boys before they become sexually active, but US research from 2012 showed that only one third of U.S. female teens and fewer than seven percent of U.S. boys got the recommended three doses.

"Our findings suggest promise for simplified vaccine administration schedules that might be cheaper, simpler, and more likely to be implemented around the world," said Mahboobeh Safaeian, an investigator in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute in Maryland.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a group of more than 150 related viruses.

Of the more than 150 types of HPV, more than 40 types can be passed from one person to another through sexual contact.

The Gardasil vaccine is produced by Merck & Co., Inc. (MRK 46.80 Up 0.98(2.14%) ) The vaccine is called a quadrivalent vaccine because it protects against FOUR HPV types: 6, 11, 16, and 18.

Condoms on the other hand are effective against FOURTY types of HPV. Condoms carry the added bonus benefit of protecting against herpes, syphilis , gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichinosis, HIV and unwanted pregnancies, features not yet found in the poorly performing $130 per dose gardasil.

In addition to the long list of health benefits, condoms do not cause adverse reactions.

Unfortunately, not everyone uses them consistently.

they probably picked a three dose schedule because it fit the protocol for a vaccine of this type.
