Students wear dresses and skirts during Skirt for Sasha Day Friday (teen burned on bus)

On Friday, about half of the 100 students at Maybeck High School wore skirts for Skirts for Sasha Day and carried signs that said "Get well, Sasha, we miss you."...

The teen, who was burned on a bus earlier this week because he was wearing a skirt, also became somewhat of an activist for the non-binary gender community. Fleischman even became politically involved in the issue of nonbinary gender, gathering 27,000 signatures on the Internet in hopes of catching President Barack Obama's attention to the subject....

On Monday night, while riding an AC Transit bus from Maybeck High School in Berkeley to the family home in Oakland's Glenview district -- the same bus the skirt-clad teen has ridden for a year without any problem -- a 16-year-old Oakland High School student boarded the bus, saw the teen asleep in the rear of the bus and took out a lighter and lit the teen's skirt on fire....

"During (the) suspect interview, the suspect stated he did it because he was homophobic," lead police investigator Officer Anwawn Jones said in the probable cause statement.
