BENGHAZI!! - Bookstore owners told to return "THE EMBASSY HOUSE" stock to S&S
by my pet rock

Hi everyone. I am a (very) long-time dkos user, but this is my first diary. I lurk - a LOT - and since I have the mic for a sec I just wanna say HI everybody! Love your work, thanks for the links, I spam them all over facebook.

Now - let's get down to business. Say you work for a bookstore, or know someone who does. They'll periodically get emails from different publishers informing you of their GREAT DEALS!! on books you'll never be able to make money on anyway, since Amazon will have them for 40% off before they're even published - but I digress.

Now let's say you've been giggling over popcorn as this whole "THEN I TOTALLY RAMBO'D MY BUTT OVER THAT FENCE AND I DID THIS BRUCE LEE MOVE AND LIKE ALL THE AL QAEDAS JUST FELL DOWN DEAD" business that 60 minutes got themselves into. You've been enjoying scrolling the rec list, and seeing that priceless freeze-frame of Lara "O_O wut" Logan pulling an attempted CYA.

What could be a better gift to you on a day already filled with such wonders? How about this email direct from Simon & Schyster Schuster (h/t to user PsychoSavannah for pointing out CBS's huge conflict of interest in respect to S&S) explaining that, oopsie, we need you to send all them books back right meow plz.

It's interesting, considering how many stupid, crazy, false, or flat-out libelous books get published all the time. Obviously CBS/Simon & Schuster felt they had to do some industrial-strength ass-covering.

Another press decided to publish it anyway.

From wiki

Soon after the book's release, The Dallas Morning News reported that Hatfield was a paroled felon who had been convicted in 1988 of paying a hit man $5,000 to murder his former boss with a car bomb. It was also revealed that Hatfield pleaded guilty to embezzlement in 1992. Hatfield at first denied the allegations when his publisher confronted him, but he eventually owned up to his criminal history.

Bush stated, regarding Hatfield:
“ Obviously if he's a convicted felon, his credibility is nothing, but his credibility was nothing with me to begin with because his story was totally ridiculous... ”

Hatfield stated in a later interview that the book had been "carefully fact-checked and scrutinized by lawyers" before the Bush campaign brought pressure to bear, as publicly stated by St. Martin's Press.[1]

Due to the revelations of Hatfield's criminal past, and the damage to his credibility, in October 1999, Hatfield's publisher, St. Martin's Press, recalled 70,000 copies of Fortunate Son and left an additional 20,000 books in storage. Even so, the book had already reached the New York Times bestseller list. The book was later republished by Soft Skull Press.

http://www.csmonitor.com/Books/chapter-and-verse/2012/0813/The-Jefferson-Lies-is-recalled-by-publisher-Thomas-Nelson

That was in 2012. Both historians and ministers said Barton was a liar in his claims.

Barton is a christofascist who was mentioned as a Senate candidate for the tea baggers not too long ago. He wrote a book making claims that this is a Christian nation and, as religious right wingers do, lied his ass off in defense of his blatantly false claims.

His opus was recalled after scholars pointed out the shoddy revisionist lying sack of shit that was that book.

...and this is a guy the tea baggers think is a good candidate for public office.

the reason they think this is because Barton is cozy with Raphael Cruz, Sarah Palin, and other such hucksters who claim god wants the military to overthrow the U.S govt. and allow the fundamentalists to loot the treasury because they're all godly...

...apparently lying your ass off is a godly trait to the religious right.

and a wonderful example of why mega-corps should not be allowed to be that.

CBS used its right arm -- 60 minutes -- to promo the story to promo the book by CBS's left arm, Simon & Schuster.

Now that its turned out to be a pile of steaming Creative Bull Shit, CBS is taking a double hit.

Poster children for the new yellow journalism...muckrakers...make it up as you go.

To quote Rush as he was broadcasting on national and foreign services radio, being filmed on television: "The media shouldn't be choosing the candidates" or some similar CBS.

And unlike their post-Rather reporting, this much-deserved new understanding of what CBS stands for - is all based on truth.

I too lost confidence in CBS News over what they did to Dan Rather and Mary Mapes. But it was also typical of what was done to anyone trying to tell the truth in public about dubya. Media people lost their jobs all over the country for trying to do so, at publications large and small. Photographers too. Remember when no one was allowed to photograph the flag-draped coffins coming home from Iraq? Nobody dared report on the REAL cost of that war. Their own cowardly necks were at risk if they did. Not once was the nation allowed to honor the dead troops from Iraq when their bodies were returned to Dover AFB. NO coverage whatsoever was allowed. Lazy chickenshit SOBs bush and cheney couldn't be bothered to go to Dover AFB to greet the caskets. Heaven forbid America should see the real cost of this war! Had to perpetuate the PNAC illusion that this was a fucking cakewalk that would last no more than six weeks and all that surefire Iraqi oil money would pay for so the almighty American taxpayer wouldn't have to be troubled any. And let's all not forget, either - that was one of the FIRST things President Obama did once he'd been sworn in. He got his ass to Dover AFB to meet the returning caskets. Didn't matter that it was in the middle of the night. He went when they were scheduled to arrive, and the cameras and microphones were there, too - freely informed and invited by the White House.

it can be helpful. Whoever that incredible ceremony doesn't reduce to a moist eye, isn't watching. Every American ... especially the media and politicians ... should be honored to watch. (reposted)

Every casket means an entire family and community has lost a light...but our PNAC pals are busy with the "cha-ching".

Good for Obama and good rant.
