Typhoon Haiyan compounds Philippines earthquake devastation
Typhoon Haiyan has exacerbated the problems faced by the residents on Bohol island struggling to recover from an earthquake that killed 222 people three weeks ago, according to the Red Cross
Haiyan, a category-5 super typhoon, scoured the northern tip of Cebu province and headed northwest towards Boracay island, both tourist destinations, after lashing the central islands of Leyte and Samar with 170mph wind gusts and 19ft waves.
Power and communications in the three large islands of Samar, Leyte and Bohol were almost completely down but authorities promised to restore them within 24 hours.
"The power went off straight away," said Red Cross worker Nichola Jones who was on Bohol island, the epicentre of an October 15 earthquake that killed 222 people when Typhoon Haiyan hit.
"The issue in Bohol is serious because we've just had the huge earthquake three weeks ago. There are already 270,000 people who are living here without shelter, under tarpaulins or makeshift shelters," she said.

(28,151 posts)2. Yes, I thought I remembered that!
When I was at work earlier today and was thinking of the poor people caught in this nightmare typhoon from hell and was pretty sure there had been an earthquake there not very long ago.
Now that I see your post I remember thinking about that, glad for the confirmation. I can't even imagine what these most unfortunate souls are experiencing.
I hear Kerry's made a statement that we're here to help. Glad of it. I'm sure there will be fundraising here too and America can be pretty generous at times.
