(24,780 posts)Sometimes it's served her well, at times it got her seriously assaulted by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In any event, she take risks. She took one with this story and she got burned. She should have known better. That's my take on this. There also may well be more sinister motives like panderng to the far right. We may never know for sure.

(24,780 posts)Few know the Middle East as well as she does. She has covered the ME for years. She knows many people connected with the ME and has relationships there.
Here's the thing. She was covering the ME when the neocons got us into Afghanistan and Iraq. Winger neocons where all over the policy making in the ME and some likely gave her some great leads and stories so there could be a right wing connection there.
But in all likelihood someone she knows from those days gave her the guys name. She got the name because these right wing bastards are all about selling something to make money off their ideology. And the guy has a book deal. So they know she's the kind that would run with a story like this. Facts matter not to the RW when there's money to be made. Somebody burned her, but she took the risk.
And because of her very extensive experience in the ME, I believe they let her have the control. And the higher ups got burned too.
