The short side is the gubmint will fuck you every time. It's the nature of the beast.
Whether or not it's Orange, or Gulf War Syndrome, or maybe even civilian well contamination near bases, the military will drag its feet and slow the wheels of justice to a near standstill. Then it will wait to admit culpability after it has been proven in the courts. It's the hurry up and wait on steroids. They will fuck you at every turn.
It's hard to believe that I've been out for 30 years now. I went in under Carter and came out under Raygun. I saw the introduction of the pee test and K9 berthing searches. I joined at 17, electronics school then I spent 2 years on a deep ocean survey ship and a patrol on a boomer. I was lucky, there was nothing hot while I was in, not that it would have changed what I was doing fighting the cold war MAD strategy in my own small cog in the MIC machine way.
The thing is, that every time I hear thank you for your service or similar I want to say hey, you really want to thank vets? Please call your Congressman and tell them to support the vets who need it. Tell them to create some jobs programs. Ask them why is it possible that someone who stepped up when their country called is left to life under a sheet of cardboard.
