For me personally, the "marketplace" is a codeword for unrestrained capitalism. I do not have a lot of faith that the "marketplace" can fix anything. I have much more confidence in the people working together under the auspice of "government".
The "marketplace" will not feed the hungry or house the homeless. It will not sufficiently employ the jobless. It is primarily about greed and profits, not humanitarian concerns.
Also, it will not provide healthcare to those that need it. I have deep reservations that the "government" will ever be able to fix our healthcare system by working with the "marketplace". It seems to me to be a very strong Republican idea.
Nonetheless, at this time, I feel I have no choice but to support the attempt to work with the "marketplace", ie, the insurance industry, to find health coverage for millions of Americans that do not have any. I don't think it is a Democratic idea. I think it had a much better chance of success if we had chosen a "government-run" single-payer system.
I am not a big fan of the "marketplace". Just my opinion.

(11,709 posts)It seems to me that those who oppose the marketplace entirely do not truly believe in what they are selling, while those who oppose reasonable regulations on the marketplace do not truly believe in what they are selling, either.
If your product or idea has value to the community it will withstand both competition and precaution.
