"If Newspaper Stupid had a top 40, Richard Cohen would be the Beatles in 1965"

Stop This Man Before He Writes Something Again

Richard Cohen, who plays the role of The Responsible Liberal in Fred Hiatt's daily Carnival Of The Unexplained, has now passed into the realm of performance art. Hard on the heels of his blockbuster entitled, "Holy Crap, Who Knew Slavery Was Such A Bummer!", he has topped that with an exploration of the political impact of modern marriage that makes Sarah Palin sound like Margaret Mead. If Newspaper Stupid had a top 40, Richard Cohen would be the Beatles in 1965. Ostensibly about how Chris Christie's appeal to the denizens of the monkeyhouse may be limited, Cohen nevertheless goes for the gold.

Today's GOP is not racist, as Harry Belafonte alleged about the tea party, but it is deeply troubled - about the expansion of government, about immigration, about secularism, about the mainstreaming of what used to be the avant-garde. People with conventional views must repress a gag reflex when considering the mayor-elect of New York - a white man married to a black woman and with two biracial children. (Should I mention that Bill de Blasio's wife, Chirlane McCray, used to be a lesbian?) This family represents the cultural changes that have enveloped parts - but not all - of America. To cultural conservatives, this doesn't look like their country at all.

A gag reflex? I mean, seriously. A fking gag reflex? Because a white man and a black woman might have been having enough sexytime within the bonds of holy matrimony to produce a couple of biracial children? Did Cohen forget how to spell "octoroon"? And these are the people whose delicate sensibilities Chris Christie has to learn to accommodate? But they, of course, are Not Racist, and this is not about race, because nothing ever is about race.

I wonder what Mr Cohen's reflex is about the best known bi-racial person in the world - his President

...like, today. There is simply no excuse for his "gag reflex" comments, none. One might also question whether these pieces are vetted by an editor before they are published? Did no one foresee the reaction to those comments?

Jeff Bezos, are you listening? Anyone at WaPo? If you keep paying this sorry excuse for a human being, your paper will be forever sullied.
